I never was one of the line guys. I usually asked a girl out that I had had some chance to get to know a little, but on a few occasions I have asked a complete stranger out. I once asked a girl out who was just walking across campus when I was in graduate school; I don't even remember what I said. She said yes, but she turned out to be a little boring and so we only went out a couple of times. Another time I had seen a girl alone in a restaurant near campus a couple of times, so when I saw her again, I asked if I could join her and she said yes. We ended up dating for a few months. I had to break up with he three times before she didn't successfully convince me to resume dating. So what has always worked best for me is to just be honest and say what fit the circumstances.
