As the person before me posted, a mother and daughter can always be good friends... if they keep in mind that the relationship must be dynamic and change as the daughter ages. As a little girl, a daughter wants her mother as a playmate. As they grow, children want their parents to remain in the background, while they assert their independence... but they don't want Mom to go TOO far because they need advice or a shoulder to cry on (or even just reliable transportation!). I've been told that the teen years can make or break a mother/daughter relationship. My mom and I were always close, in spite of distance or differences of opinion, until the day she passed away about two and a half years ago. I miss her every day. I'm in the "tough" relationship years with my older daughter now and I am doing my best to respect her, her decisions and her space... but I will always be her mother, with her best interests and safety at heart. It's important to me that we come out on the other side as understanding, loving adults who not only love each other, but actually LIKE each other :) That, if we're lucky, will last a lifetime!
