In the year 634 A.D, i.e. 2 years after the death of prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The Islamic Armies conquer Damascus, Hams and the remaining towns of Syria and according to the terms of treaty, they reliazesome amount of tax (Jizya) for the protection of life and property of the citizens and the defence of the country. Later the Muslim leaders received news that Haraclius had brought a big army which he was anxious to bring against the Muslims. Therefore they decided to bring together their own scattered armies in various conquered towns to concentrate at one point to face the hordes of Haraclius with joint effort. So in keeping with this decision Muslim armies started leaving the town of Hams, Demascus and othe rtowns, Khalid (RA) in Hams, Abu Ubaidah (RA) in Damascus and other general in other towns addressed the citizuns (most non-muslims) thus. "The money of monies we had realized from you was meant for the protection of your lives and properties, and also to defend your land from outside aggression. But we are sorry to inform you that we are parting with you and since we would not be able to protect and defend you, we are returning the amounts of taxes collected from you." To this the citizens replied; "God be with you and bring you back victorious. Your governance and your justice and equity have enamored us, since the Romans in spite of being our corelingionists, we have bitter experience of their opression and tyranny. By God! if they had been in your position they would have not returned a copper out of the taxes collected from us. Rather, they would have taken everything they could belonging to us." .............. www.cyberistan.org/islamic/sibai6.html#anycivil

There is another situation : When Amr Bin Al-As liberated Egypt and its Christians from the oppression and tyranny of the Byzantine Empire under which they had experienced all kinds of calamity, as the historians say. The Christians then returned to their Orthodox creed after having been forced to renounce it and Pope Benjamin, the 37th pope of the Coptic Church, returned from exile upon the invitation of Amr Bin Al-As, who requested that he reconstruct the churches and monasteries the Byzantine Empire had destroyed, and build new churches based on the needs of the Christians .

Thankyou for mentioning that. Indeed Muslims have a glorios past. Our failure to follow the guidelines set by our ancestors is the main reason for our decline. Thankyou for replying to this thread:)

Dear Naseem, we muslims though have a great past in terms of honesty, truthfulness, courtesy and god fearing then why we are distancing ourselves from such a good religion. Is it bad governance, bad leadership, or individual failures.
