i would say laptop because a laptop offers the ability of portability and now the technology is so similar they are as powerful if not sometime better than some desktop computers. The only downside is that they are higher in price.

I now have a laptop...it gets used 3 or 4 times more then my desktops ever did. It is always handy, if I see a website or have a question about something I see on a medical show..I just pick up the laptop and I have my info..if I had to go to a desktop..I would not bother.
Laptop all the way for me.

Desktops and laptops are becoming very close in their capabilities it's a matter of what your primary use is for them. If you're traveling a lot and you need the computer to be accessible to you at all times, a laptop is the only way to go. But a desktop has more going for it in terms of cost, durability, and ease of maintenance.
Laptops' biggest advantage is portability it also makes them more vulnerable. They're more likely to be dropped and broken, or lost, or stolen. You can probably store as much data on a laptop as on a desktop, but you probably wouldn't want to risk losing it all.
Traditionally, desktops have had zero portability you only could access files located on your desktop computer from that computer. But that's changing; your desktop may stay in one place, but your files don't have to.
USB (Universal Serial Bus) memory keys, small devices that plug in to your computer to extract or load data, let you move files from one computer to another quickly and easily. And wireless networks allow you to work on the same files from any other networked computer.
Just as Internet capability is no longer a desktop vs. laptop decision point, features and functions are equivalent between the two, although desktops generally have better sound quality. The cost for a laptop is considerably higher than for a desktop with comparable speed and power. Although laptop prices are falling, you'll still pay hundreds of dollars more,
Service and repair costs are much higher too. To get at the parts, laptops pretty much have to be taken apart. The parts themselves are more expensive, almost double, and labor costs more. With a desktop, you can just open the back or side panel and replace the parts.
Because desktop components can be added or removed separately, unlike many laptops' all-in-one design, desktops can operate without some parts.

I perfer labtops because for one thing there portible and you can use it where ever you go which is what I like becuase I can use it while laying on my sofa while watching tv and to me its more relaxing then just being on my computer plus I can bring it on vacation with me wich is always nice to have.

the portability really does make a difference between the two of these its real nice the way you could isolate yourself sometimes and continue with your work

I recently got a 17" Dell Inspiron E1705 and I absolutely love! I was never really interested in laptops until I realized how fun it is, I can browse in bed, in the couch outside...so much freedom. Best gift I've ever gotten.
I still do have my desktop, but it really does not compare at all. I still do use my desktop, I'm afraid that if I stop using it altogether I'll get too used to my laptop and will never be able to go back to desktops again...heh!

yeah i know how you feel its really nice to do something youve been doing inside for a long time now. do you post discussions while your outside? :P
i can't say that neither one is better than the other, and i don't think that laptops could still compare to desktops. Desktops provide the amount of power that a laptop couldn't obtain.

All of those stuff made by its own purpose for Desktop we can do from a lenient duty until heavy duty of computing such us Video Editing, Graphic Design, Desktop Publishing, Server and etc and laptop designed for mobile activity that actually the laptop can do as desktop do but i think it is not is equitable if we use a laptop for editing video, actually we can do that but if we in emergency time i think no problem to use laptop to edit a video.

Pretty good topic you got going here.. Personally, I LOVE my desktop because theres just a comfort level with my desktop that I dont have with a laptop. I do have a laptop but its pretty tiny and I basically use it to operate my blog, check email, youtube, school, etc. On my desktop I just feel comfortable using the proper keyboard, the mouse, my printer and scanner, its all there! I dont have that kind of loving feeling with my laptop! :(
