here in the philippines we are accustomed to answering regular phone calls with phrases like 'Hello, who is this?' or 'Hello, may i know who is on the line? please?' specially to unknown callers. but, if my friends call i just reply them by saying 'yes, what made you call? or 'what's up?' it's rather informal than those who you do not know.

Of course that is the way to pick up and start the communication. Hello! then they talk and then I say it is I or who may I say is calling if it is for my hubby. That is just good to keep things going. Good luck in communicating on the telephone from this point on.

yes. i say "hello" when answering the phone.
i guess it has become of a habit for most of us.
we see our parents doing that, their parents doing that, and so on...
so i think most people has been doing that for a long long time already. it's just the most common (and i think easiest way) to answer the phone. you don't get to be mean, and you can say a greeting with just two syllables. =D

There are times when I sense if the person is an elderly person. It wasn't long when I start using phone. I have not yet got people's numbers. But if I notice it is an elderly person calling, I do say "yes" sir or ma. Thanks

Yes, I answer the phone with a "Hello". At one time, we used to answer with our numbers here in England, but with all the bogus calls and such, we were advised not to give our number in confirmation, so now, we just say hello until we know who's on the other end.
Brightest Blessings.

A lot of the time I say "hello", yes. But often I will also say, "_________'s residence, Amber speaking." Especially if I'm at my parent's house, I'll say the latter phrase. It helps people not to confuse me with my mom, because if they say her name and I correct them, they feel embarrassed. And I feel bad for embarassing them. : ) I really should though always do the second one. But I don't.

Hi bujoyseth!(",)
Yes, I do say "Hello" or sometimes "Hi" when I answer the phone. I think it is because it has become a tradition and I think its appropriate to say it before inquiring who is in the line. It's also a way of respecting the caller. When someone called just to make friends I do answer when I am not doing anything but when I'm busy I really don't bother to chat with them.
"Hello" is a greeting just like saying "good morning". When I answer the phone I usually say this line, " Hello, good morning! This is _____ residence. Can I have your name please."
Great day to you!(",)

It depends. If I know it's my boyfriend I'll answer it with something silly or raunchy like "Bob's Balloon Emporium, Bob Speaking" or "Bridgit's Bordello, how may I service you?" just to get a laugh.
There's a radio contest here where you answer your phone "I Listen to Joe" instead of "Hello" during a set time they let you know ahead of time on the program, and if you answer it like that, they give you $1000, so I have answered it once or twice like that if I don't recognize the number and it's about the time they would call.
Normally I answer "Hello", it's "Hey" if I recognize the number and it's a friend, or "Ahoy Hoy" to a close friend just to get a giggle.
Funny bit of knowledge, most people recognize that last one as how Mr. Burns on The Simpsons answers his phone, but Alexander Graham Bell actually said this was the proper way to answer the phone, and was actually the most common way the phone was answered before it was replaced by "Hello?".

For some it's already a habit to answer the phone with an instant "Hello". In the company I'm working it's a different scene. You have to say first the company name, location, followed by Good morning or evening and sometimes I use this at home that make the callers laugh. There are also prank callers who will just irrate you and make you upset.

yes, that's just how it is when i answer my calls. and that's what i usually do. it's a form of greeting someone before any professional or personal business you will have with your caller, even though you don't know him or her yet. but i do answer also without it when i'm at work because i usually say the company's name then gud day greetings to the caller.

Yes, i say hello when i pick up the phone. It is a long tradition of saying hello. It was first started by perhaps Alexander Graham Bell. This word has no meaning, an it was just an arbitrary word that he chose. But sometimes, when i know who the caller is, i use other starters as well like "How are you"...
