A new way to grocery shop

I just saw a new way to grocery shop that is coming to the US where you actually scan and bag your groceries as you shop. You just have to go to the front to pay when you are done. There is no waiting in line. You just pay. I think this is a very interesing concept. Although it does take out interacting with people. But sometimes when I go to the store I would rather not talk to anyone. Here is the link to the article http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19276534/ . What do you all think?

It sure sounds good to me. I've seen the scanners used when people are registering for bridal gifts in a few stores here in South Florida, but not in any of our grocery stores yet. I like the idea of knowing ahead of time how much I'm spending. My husband usually does not like the way the employees bag our groceries, so this would really appeal to him.

That would be nice to know how much you are spending without having to do the math in your head the whole time. Maybe then I wouldn't spend so much shopping lol.

A store in the town I use to live in tried this a year or two ago. They had several problems with this system that they decided that it wasn't worth the hassle. At the time I thought it was interesting. Now I realize that I don't like it anymore then I like the self check out. Its just another way for stores to cut costs.

Yes, we already have that in Canada. We have it in one grocery store in our town... at least the ones that I have been in. We don't actually go to the front and pay. You use your debit card or credit card. But as the other poster said, a lot of people don't seem to be able to grasp it and have trouble with it and there is always a cashier running over to help. I'm sure they'll get the hang of it just like we (I) got the hang of pay-at-the-pump for gas. Makes things a lot quicker than having to go stand in line to pay for your gas when you can just put your card in the pump.

I'm sure it does get confusing to people who are just starting to use it. But like you said I'm sure they'll get used to it.

Wow how neat. I hate standing in line so that would really save me the hastle!!!!! How cool. Hopefully it wouldnt eliminate too many jobs for the cashiers though. But your right, there are alot of times I dont feel like talking to anyone, so that would work out!

They actually have that at a lot of stores now its called self express where you scan your own items and pay for it right there I actually love using it because its actually quite fun to scan your own items and see the cash come out and theres not to many lines either and is a lot easier then going through a regular line only problem is you have to bag your stuff.

I would LOVE this. I am all about the self-check out when I go to the store. The only bad thing about this technology - and self-checkout - are the people who don't know how to work it or are insanely slow.

I would love that. I hate standing in line with my son, and my best friend said she won't shop with her 3 kids for that reason she waits until her husband gets home then shops at night. It would make a mothers day so much easier.

Cool! I like that concept! It is something I can go for because I can't stand too long and hate waiting in long lines. Can't wait for it to get here!

I definitely like this idea as I hate waiting in line. The lines these days are long and some of the cashiers are slow. Some of the self check out machines are a bit confusing and people take their time on those machines as well. I would love to scan and bag as I am going along and finding the items that I need. It will definitely be neat to at least try and see how it works out.

What if I have put somehing in my cart and then change my mind? At the Kroger store where I shop if I am in a hurry there is a self scan and pay checkout which I use if I just have a few items.

We have scanners in our stores and you pay after scanning any coupons by credit card. This is great when there are a lot of people in the store, as the bag your own grocery line does move faster. People are always ready in the line, which is one of the problems in the lines with checkers. I wish the scan your own groceries accepted cash, as its how I pay part of the time.

It is not necessary to wait for payment queue is a guatifying things, the proposed store can take two ways, queuing and does not queuing, which is more humane some.

That sounds very interesting. It will be good to scan your own stuff. However, I would be concerned about stealing, the carts and machines breaking down, and all that stuff. The self-check out lane always seems to have problems. If we are to bring carts with scanners and computer like technology don't you think they will break as well? Moreover carts are usually handled roughly by the customers, so I don't think the customers will take care of them. It seems like a good idea, but will store pay the extra price for these special carts and machines? Will customers be willing to use them? I still know people that LOATHE the self-check outs with a passion and we have had those for about half a decade. Umf! Pablo
