Do you have it in you to be a "good samaritan"?

I just heard over the news that a lawyer was gunned down when he came to the aid of a women who was being assaulted. The father-of-three was fatally killed in the incident that happened in downtown Melbourne, Australia. The women and one other are seriously wounded. The search has begun for the 29 year old man who apparently just walked away after the incident.
I am saddened and appalled when I hear news like this. Even in my country, people are more wary and afraid to help out people stranded at the highway due to their fear of being hijacked.
What about you guys? What does it take for you to lend a helping hand? How far would you go to help? Would you risk your life for a total stranger? Do you select who you want to help (eg: pregnant women, children, elderly..)? Please share your views on this matter.. I really do appreciate it. Thanks.

I won't make this too long. I was on my way to picking up my wife from work one night a couple months ago. A car flew by me followed by a cop car on the highway. A few seconds later I heard a loud crashing sound. I came upon the car on its roof smoking with the cop there trying to kick the drivers window open. I started to kick but relazied I had sasndals on. I grabbed the cops nightstick and broke the window open pulling the woman driver out. All in all I stopped and saved a life that night. I have a discussion somewhere in my pages here about it. But thats my good samaratin act I had performed.
HAPPY POSTIBGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Thanks for BR. I searched through my old discussions and could not find it. Afyter 20 some pages it wouldn't show anymore. Uggg. Someone on my friends list I am sure could find it in their area, discussions I responded to". But thanks again. I was only doing what I felt was right at the time and would do it again I am sure.

Well, I've never been in such a situation before but honestly, I don't think I will go out of my way to save another stranger if it meant endangering my own life. Yup, very sad indeed. I don't have that superhero complex like some people do. I think I'd only reach for my cellphone and even then, I think I'd be stunned for 5 minutes before calling the police.

Coolness~! Sometimes I think it would be awesome to be heroic. Don't you think? Maybe if it was our own flesh and blood we wouldn't think twice about it, but if it were a stranger, well I'll salute anyone who saves another stranger's life..

:) You're not the only one. I think I would be too afraid to help as well. Did you ever read about that 19-year old boy who jumped on the subway tracks in New York to save a man who fell down after getting a seizure. He just jumped over that man and flattened both of them closer to the track as the subtrain rolled over them. Miraculously, he managed to survive and was honored with a medal for his heroic efforts. Now THAT i KNOW i wouldn't do.. Maybe Grandpa Bob would.. and i mean it in a good way. :) Thanks for responding..
