Yesterday we took our new dog that we got from the pound to the vet. We needed to get him neutered and to have him given his shots. We told the vet to do a full work up on him as well. Yesterday afternoon the vet called to tell us that surgery went well but one of Freds test came back positive, Fred has a parasite in his heart. I was worried. I asked can this be treated. The vet saids, "Yes it can be treated but it costs about two hundred dollars. Do you want to treat it or let it go?" Do I want to treat it? Why wouldn't I want to treat. He is a member of our family. We wouldn't allow one of our children die and neither would we allow our dog to die. He said that he thought the reason that Fred was at the dog pound was because his last owners couldn't afford the treatment. Poor Fred

One would think that a vet of all ppl would understand that our pets are our babies also. Now that my children are fully grown I don't know where I'd be w/o my babies, Poppit and Dixie. With no grandbabies to love on, my four legged furry babies get lots of love and attention and we receive lots of love in return. How could a vet not know we would do anything for our babies. Sure, money might be tight, but we will find a way to keep them healthy. Fred is lucky to have you and obviously lucky to be rid of his previous owners.

I was shocked to hear the vet question whether or not we would be getting Fred treated. We have only had Fred for a week so I think he didn't realize that we already in love with Fred. Poppit and Dixie are lucky to have you for their momma. I bet they are as spoiled as our dogs are.

sounds like Fred has heart worms. This is something that could have been prevented with appropraite medication. The previous owners could have not only treated it once it happened, but prevented it in the first place! It sounds like they are one of those typical types that get a pet because it is cute and fun, but don't want to spend the money required to keep it healthy. This behavior just makes my blood boil! *slipping off to get another blood pressure pill.*

Your correct, its heart worms. My fiancee told the vet yesterday to do a full work up on Fred since we didn't really know anything about Fred. I am glad that she did. I feel bad for Fred because I can only imagine how much pain he is going to have from this treatment. It costs a lousy fifteen dollars to get him the heart worm vacination. For those who have pets please spend the money to get them vacinated.

Thank you for bringing this problem to the light. I am one of those people that love animals and would have a pet in a minute. but I do not and the reason is simple. I can not afford to take a pet to a Vet. if he should be come ill. and that is just not fair to the animal. I appreciate you bringing up this problem, because it is a responsibility to pets for their owners to look after them and part of that is to have them in good health. . Moral of the story if you can't pay a vets bill do NOT own a pet.

These days there is pet insurance which we did get for our other dogs but because we got fred from a different place it wasn't available for him yet. His medical bills will be out of our pockets totally. As my fiancee no matter what all of our dogs will get the medical help they need. Once Fred has his treatments we will get his insurance as well.

Fortunately Fred has you now... I can't say poor Fred, cause he's a lot better off than a lot of dogs out there. He's got some good loving coming to him.

I guess I meant poor Fred because of what happened with his previous owners as well as the treatment he is going to have to have.
