My cousin is dying

My sister has been planning to take my mom to NJ for quite some time to see her brother, my uncle. My brother was resistant to mom flying alone so I suggested that maybe I should go too, then mom wasn't going alone. Meanwhile, my uncle's letters about his son were sounding serious, so when I wrote one of mom's letters to her brother, I asked about my cousin. At the end of May we got a letter back saying that he was only given 6 months to live. Mom got a phone call tonight from a doctor in NJ. Well, mom doesn't hear too great, got confused and lost the call. She called me, I called my sister since I don't have my cousin's number to call them. She called me back & now they are saying that my cousin may only have as much as 4 weeks to live. My brother, when he heard how bad my cousin was had decided to go to NJ as well. Now it looks like its a good thing since my cousin's wife doesn't know anything about any of the papers or legal stuff since my cousin hasn't shared it with her. I'm glad I decided to go back when I did. I'm kind of afraid that we might very well be planning a funeral when we get there. But it won't be the first & probably won't be the last funeral I've had to help with. So, guys, tell your wives, significat others about all the money stuff so you don't leave her like my cousin seems to be leaving his wife. Like my dad left my mom. Women, demand to know about the money, don't expect that it'll just take care of itself! If you are really partners, share that part of it too!

My brother has taken over all of mom's paper work. I think my cousin had taken over all of my uncle's. I hope that my brother can help find the paperwork, bring it back to Texas & help out.

That's why I keep all paperwork in our file cabinet. I told hubby repeatedly that if something were to ever happen to me, have his sis-in-law go thru the file cabinet with him to get all the necessary paperwork like life insurance, medical insurance, bank info, etc etc etc. It's all in one place and I showed him everything several times already. I do all the paperwork in the house so it's hubby that needs to know where everything is.

I'm very sorry to hear about your cousin. We recently lost my mother to Alzheimer's. Actually it was less than 3 weeks ago. Luckily, my father knew about all the money because he took care of it all these last few years while she was ill. But if he didn't, I could only imagine what a mess it would have been. You offer very good advice. We should let someone know are money, insurance, etc plans.
