You need to see what 'facilities' you can provide to the dog. If you live in an apartment, I would suggest you go for one of the smaller breeds - I could recommend a pekingese if you want one out of the ordinary. Extremely intelligent, exotic looking, fiercely protective. Chihuahuas are an alternative. If you live on the ground floor and can provide some running space for the dog, you could go for one of the bigger breeds - a labrador(extremely loving, good watch dogs, unbelievably gentle with children). Other suggestions are bulldogs, daschunds or great danes. These are breeds which will hold their own against street dogs, though you do want to protect your doggie....

For someone to tell you what the best breed of dog is you would have to tell us what you are looking for. Are you looking for a dog that is good with children? Are you wanting a small dog? Or a large dog? There are many things that factor in to what type of dog works best for a person or their family. Here is a website that has some good information on it about dogs. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/children.htm

In my opinion, chihuahuas are the best breed of dog. I have had other breeds in the past, including a 110 lb. doberman who was a big, loving teddy bear! However, I don't believe that I will ever purchase/adopt any other breed of dog in the future! They are incredibly loyal, loving, and have a high level of intelligence! You can take them anywhere, and apartment owners will often allow for small pets, including chihuahuas. I adopted my chihuahua a few years ago, and he is the sweetest little thing. 'Loves to cuddle!

A boxer dog.
I own a quite rare white one, most are brindle (browny black patch like) or red (amber colour). They are ugly looking things in one hand but cute in the other. They are very well natured, easy to train and have a very muscular chest and stand proud.
It's what i'd call a proper dog, not a little oversized rat that yaps all the time .

My favorite dog is the chow chow.
Loving, loyal, cute & cuddly, not to mention a chow will protect its family with its life.
Good luck puppy shopping!

I think everyone could give you a different answer on this, lol. I think dog selection would have alot to do with you and your personality not to mention how much room they need. I'm partial to german shepherds but don't have the space necessary to keep such a large dog. My mother in law also has space issues and decided to get a yorkie. For them, it's a well made match as yorkies need lots of attention and my mother in law is retired and loves spoiling her dog.

I think a labrador would be the best choose, but I think it depends of you needed. and if it is for some work or just for bring joy.

Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. all dogs are good but you must pick the one that best suits your personality, pocketbook, and whether they are suitable for an apartment or need a big living area to romp and play.
My wife and I love our shih tzu..but this toy dog breed needs a lot of grooming as their hair grows very long and needs daily brushing or the hair will matt. We cut our shih tzu hair very short and this cost 30 dollars every two months.
but a jack russell has short hair and it not a big dog but they are very hyper..they are fun but they should have some exercise daily ..as all dogs should . i hate to see a dog chained up..this is cruel in my estimation. also your dog should be housebroken asap. i have read some of the replys and a mexican dog can be good but they are small and don't like the cold weather..also tempermental?
dog's are very loyal but it makes a difference if you have children or not..if you leave them for long periods of time how will they go to the bathroom?
A dog is a big responsibility and you should pick the dog only if you have the time and patience to care for a dog. I have seen neighbors ignore dogs and it makes me feel sad that they don't think of the dogs feeling. Good luck.
