What is the best hair gel to use?

I have never used hairspray or other hair products except for shampoo and conditioner. Since I got my hair cut yesterday into a very short style that needs to be "spiked" to look right, I need to get some sort of product that will make it do that. So, do I get gel, mouse, glue, what? Help me please.
