If you see something you really want are you a buyer or a budgetter?

If you see something you really want what do you do? Do you go and buy it straight away or do you stop to think about whether you can afford it or not?
I'm a budgetter, I think about whether I can afford it and then if it is really important to me then I work it into my budget. I'm not talking about things I need - I will always buy necessities but things that I want but don't need.
In this context a buyer would be someone who sees something they want and buys it straight away, usually with a credit card and without thinking it through and frequently has one or more credit cards maxed out.
Which are you? Would you rather be different?

If I see something that I want, I will buy it if it does not cut us short of money. Most of the time I will save up money to pay cash for something we really want. If it is something that we do not really have to have then I will pass it by and save my money. I would rather pay cash for things instead of charging it. If I do charge it, i pay it right back the same month.

Thanks for your response. I think if you can't afford something now and it is only something you want then you probably should not get it as it only causes stress later. I also prefer to pay cash for things as that wasy you can see the real effect, if you use a card it can build up on you without you even noticing if you aren't careful

Your welcome. I agree with you also. I like to pay cash for things so I don't get too far into debt. I like to save money up and wait until I have enough to buy the things that are most important or the things that we have to have or need.

I'm a budgetter too thats why sometimes I'm blaming my self for it. When I'm going to a shoping mall to bought for some imprtant things that are very necessary to buy I sometimes look for what I want and of course my money is budgetted I will leave it and wish to come back some other day if I have a money to buy. But unfortunately when I came back it is already sold and start to feel regret and blame my self about it. But I dont have a choice it is sold already.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear that, it can be hard to think in those terms and deny yourself soemthing that you later regret.
I find that if I have savings and there is something I want really badly I will buy it with my credit card and make a payment for the same amount back into my card when I get home. I don't do it very often but it has happened.

I guess I would be a little of both . I have a credit card that we have maxed out and I love to buy something when I see it but also have just walked away knowing that we can't afford it .
If I feel that it will save us money somehow then I will buy it even if we can't really afford it at the time or if I feel we have a little extra money that month , then I will get it as well .
In some cases this works because I do save the money on what I bought but on the other hand it doesn't help when we really can't afford it or when something unexpected comes up and we could have used the money better for this .
I often buy gifts on sale so I have them when there is a birthday or something coming around and I know it will be hard to get the money and this way I have saved on what I would have normally paid for and it is a much nicer gift .

Thanks for your reply. I sort of do a similar thing, if I see a perfect gift for someone then I buy it and hold onto it. I do a lot of shopping on line as well and have got some great bargains and in addition to that all of my line shopping is done through referrals from another site so I get points for buying things as well as cheaper goods.

I'm definitely very much a budgeter. I saved up my earnings here at Mylot from February till May in order to buy a Rowing Machine I wanted. Knowing that I was working towards the rowing machine gave me the incentive I needed to keep going.
I don't have the money to just splash out on things that I want. But I do like to save, knowing that I'm working towards something special.
I find that you get more satisfaction from something knowing that you couldn't just splash out and get ti right away, as opposed to saving or budgeting for it.

Hi, pilbara!
This is a very interesting topic to me. Well, I was a buyer before. I buy unnecessary things without thinking carefully. As long as I feel that I like it, I will go and buy. Yes, I used credit cards and sometimes cash. I will only feel regret after I came home or when I received my shocking credit card statement (sounds like I never expect it :))
But after getting married, I became a budgetter :) I make sure I will do my budget carefully and consider every single aspect before I jump into the conclusion to buy or not to buy. I do need to consult my husband before I make any purchasing. I think I become wiser now on how to be a good buyer :)

Hello and thank you. I've heard quite a few people say similar things. Maybe after you have a partner it becomes more important to be careful with your money as if you spend all your money when single you are the only one with a problem, but in a family more people are affected. Credit card bills do have a way of creeping up on you :)

I am a budgeter. If it is something I really must have, I will figure it into my budget somehow. I rarely buy anything on the spot. I always go home and think about it. Unless of course it is a necessity of sorts. Usually if it's something frivolous that I thought I must have, after careful consideration, I usually end up not buying the item at all. I will think about my budget, etc and decide it is not really worth it.

If I have it, I will think on it and go from there; If not, I'll budget;

I used to be a buyer but now I am getting to be a budgetter more than a buyer now that we have the money lol. I thought that it was suppossed to work the other way around actually. When I don't have any money I can always come up with lots of things that I want to get. When I do have the money I can't seem to find anything to spend it on. Now that I have money coming in from babysitting I am trying to plan on what to get so that I don't go out and completley blow it and then discover, "Wow, I really should have saved it so that I could have gotten (insert random object)"

It depends on the amount of the item. Usually if it is $20 or less I am a buyer and I can finagle that money out of the budget to pay it off when the bill comes due. If it is over $20 I am definitely a budgetter. We have a very strict budget in our house and every cent we make goes to something, so I can't scrape up an extra $50 or so for an impulse buy.

Hey. Im quiet good when it comes to things like that, I see things that I want all the time, but most times I choose to ignore such wants and stick to what Im suppose to be shopping for... I refuse to own credit cards. Although I budget, if I really want something that bad, I buy it right there then, with cash... So you could say Im a bit of both...

Thanks for your reply. I actually have a credit card, but I only use it for paying bills and I have an automatic payment from my main account to the credit card for half that amount every time I get paid (fortnightly). The reason I do this is that I get points for using my credit card and I can convert these into either cash or something I can use so I figured why not. Since I always pay on time my card is interest free.

I will usually wait and see if I can find it cheaper, in a thrift store or something before I will put myself in debt buying the item. I try to follow a strict budget, and I am not an impulse buyer, my husband is on the other hand, and that is why he does not carry a debit or credit card!

Thanks for your reply. I also prefer not to go into debt if I can help it. Having to sort it out later just causes too much stress and it isn't worth it. My husband is the same and he didn't carry our card, but then he got one without telling me and ran up a bill of $13k. I don't know why they approved it as he isn't working.

Previously, i mean some years ago, i used to be a buyer and will not thinkg about budget, price etc. During that time, I used to buy almost anything that i like, i never thought twice during that time. I ended with lots of credits in my credit card and had to suffer a lot and I somehow got over it slowly and steadily.
Now i have become a very big budgetter and will think twice before buying a product and will analyze it and will take time before buying it and will end up not buying most of the things now. Which i feel is the best way to go rather than being compulsive shopper.

I am also a budgeter. If I found something I would think whether I am able to afford it or not. But if I really wanted something I will save money a little per day until it is enough and then I will go and buy it. I do not believe in credit cards, I never have one. I only have a debit card just for the purpose of online transactions.

I'm both a buyer and a budgetter...If there is something I'd like to get..I do my research and try to find the item I'd like to get it for the lowest cost possible--for instance...I really needed a new pair of running shoes...the pair I had was quite literally going to fall apart...LOL--these shoes were Easy Spirits and were given to me as a gift--now I do happen to have a few "extra" bucks and thought...mmm...let me go to Footlocker..and of course, there they sell all the tops brands..Nike, Addidas, etc--well it shows you how long it's been since I bought running shoes (glorified sneakers to my thinking)-Yikes I couldn't believe the prices! I mean technically speaking I had the money but no way was I going to spend $80 for a pair of shoes! So a few doors down was a Payless shoe store and they had a buy one get one half off...I got two nice pairs of running shoes..all for $25.00--can't beat that...
Then sometimes...not often I will splurge on myself on something that of course I probably could live without...not like I'm going to die without it...but same thing..will hunt around for the cheapest price...quite often on e-Bay, or Amazon.com--I don't have the woes of credit cards though--don't have any!!

I make sure my bills are paid, but unfortunately, there are times when I spend more than I should. When I have a credit card that works, I use it.
