Do People Often Mispronounce Your Surname ... Does This Bother You?

Before I was married, I had a very difficult surname for people to pronounce. It was regularly misspelled as well. I was very excited to be 'taking on' my husband's surname, as I felt it'd be much easier for people to 'handle.' As it turned out, I was wrong, and this is true to this day, as people continue to 'stumble' over my last name. I AM NOT trying to get you to share your surname here, in fact PLEASE DON'T. I'm just wondering if you have an easy surname to pronounce and spell, or if your's is one of the one's people have trouble with? If so, does this bother you, and who usually has problems with it? If it's during a business call, are you more inclined to 'hear' what they have to say, if they get your surname correct?

My Surname is kind of unique. It is not at all common and most people don't know how to pronounce it. The variations and mis-pronunciations are comical at times. The ironic thing is that it is pronounced the way it is spelled. People make it much more difficult than it actually is, or they call me a pair of gloves. (inside joke you'll probably never get since I'm not sharing my real name) At restaurants, I actually use one of two common names because it's just easier. I either go by Hamilton, or Appleton when makeing reservations. Family and people who know me well usually get a good laugh at that. However when I do it with say first dates and recent business aquaintences, they seem a little freaked out by it. After informing them that I work for the CIA and have to maintain a cover.... :):):) Minnie Mouse is HOT! filmbuff

You've got me very intrigued as to what your surname is, filmbuff. "A pair of gloves?" Now I'm thoroughly confused.:) That's a great way to handle reservations. I'd never have thought of doing that, and it would've come in handy, with my maiden name. Since you're not sharing your unusual surname, thanks for letting me know what you do for a living.;) Thanks too, for your response.

Your secret is safe with me, filmbuff. By the way, do you happen to have a close associate by the name of ----, J. ----!? Just curious.;) Thanks for not 'using the line' after, I would tell you my name, but ... as I wouldn't want it to create 'a stir' on here, if you know what I mean. It might be 'upsetting' to some.:) You're correct about women and mystery. Transdisc, I'm 'amazed' that you too have a name that can't even be used for reservations. You've always led me to believe that your's would be a life, where you're constantly hounded by paparazzi.;)

It does work well for reservations. Don't tell anyone about my super-sekrit job. I will leave out the line about "I could tell you my real name but then I'd have to kill you..." although I do use that on dates, which works surprinsingly well. Women like mystery...who knew? ;)

Hi Sweetie, my surname is hard to mispronounce so unless I was incredily posh and said it differently like Mrs Bucket (Bouquet) in keeping up appearances (english comedy) I pretty much get away with it. It does grate a bit when people insist on calling me Mrs instead of miss and cannot say my first name correctly, but they cannot pronounce Shreks surname correctly either, so if I used his name I'd not recognise myself at all, lol.

Hi rainbow, It's great to hear from someone who has an easy to pronounce surname, although, I guess it's a 'trade off' for you, since your first name gives people difficulty. It sounds like 'Shrek's' last name is a tough one. Thanks for sharing.:)

I never though of it like that, hmmm trade off, lol! I used to think about changing my name but I suppose I'd still be me underneath, we just have to put up with these things, I did use to wander why my mum married my day and got a horrible surname when I was little and teased for it, seems pretty funny now looking back.

My maiden surname had only four letter and was easy to pronounce however was often spelled wrong with extra letters! I always thought..."Gee, it's not rocket science people!" LOL My current surname is often spelled and pronounced wrong!! However it helps when a telemarketer calls and mispronounces because I don't feel bad when I say they have the wrong number and it gives me a laugh after I have hung up!! You really have to look at the bright side in these situations :)

Hi heavenschild, Really, people added extra letters to what sounds like a simple name to pronounce? I hear you about your current surname, as it happens to me all of the time too.;) That's a great way to handle telemarketers. I think I'll say something like, "There's no one by that name living here," the next time I receive one of these calls. Thanks for the tip, and for sharing too.:)

My surname is difficult for people to pronounce and spell, and it does annoy me. Also, it's Hispanic, so I sometimes get telemarketing calls in Spanish, even though I don't speak Spanish. Also, my first name is easy to pronounce, but is rarely spelled correctly. People who get frequent emails from me (friends or coworkers) are a lot more likely to at least spell it correctly; they might mispronounce it, but this doesn't happen at work much since people hear me introduce myself at meetings, even if they don't really know me. Also people who are of Hispanic descent are more likely to pronounce it correctly since it is a Spanish word.

It's strange how things like this can be annoying, sappho99336. It must be frustrating getting calls in Spanish too. I'm sure the fact that people you e-mail, and are in contact with at work, that know 'the correct way,' makes you feel somewhat better about 'the others.' Thanks for your response.

Well my surname isn't too bad but my name when I was married to my ex husband was harder for many people! My son still has this name and he gets very annoyed when people mispronounce it - though it never really bothered me! xxx

Hi mummymo, It sounds as though you're very easy going, when it comes to your surname pronunciation. Not that I'm implying that you're not easy going otherwise.:) I can empathise with the way your son feels, as for some reason, it's one of my pet peeves too. Thanks for your response.
