Why does new, beneficial technology keep getting swept under the rug?

Why do so many benefical inventions go unnoticed? There was a program on not long ago about an old man who had invented a way to produce a substantial amount of power from just a small battery. He was offering it to the government and didn't want anything in return. The government wanted nothing to do with it and within a day or so, any information on that story is nowhere to be found.
