Charleston, South Carolina? What part of town should I live in?

I recently accepted a job in Charleston, SC and am unsure what part of town to live in or what apartment to live in? My job is near the Ashley River is West Ashley but living around there is far from the beach. I am looking at Mount Pleasant but cant seem to find an apartment in a good price range. Can someone help me out that lives in the area? I am at a loss and my job starts on July 9th. Thanks
