Calling all bloggers....

I've been batting around the idea of beginning my own blog, but I need some advice. Most of my friends who blog use livejournal which gets them nothing for their daily work. I know there are ways to make money with blogging, through ad sense and the like but I don't know how to do it.
So, I need advice:
1) What is a good site to host my blog?
2) Have you used ad sense and does it work?
3) Is it pennies like on mylot or a real amount of money?
4) Does it help if your blog is focused on a topic, like my MS or my cat?
I think that's it...all suggestions welcome.

www.blogger.com is free and yes you can make money blogging. I average around $200 per week. I've listed sites that pay you on http://www.blogsire.com/myblog/

At least a couple of hours a day, but not all that is paid blogging.
