I got this from my sister today, If this has been already posted I'm sorry for posting it again. I searched in the discussion's and could not find one already started.
From A Nurse:
I'll never forget the look in my patient's eyes when I had to tell them they had to go home with the drain's,new exercises and no breast. I remember begging the Doctor's to keep these women in the hospital longer, only to hear that they would, but their hand's were tied by the insurance companies. So there I sat with my patient giving them instruction's. They needed to take care of themselves, knowing full well they didn't grasp half of what I was saying, because the glazed, hopeless, frightened look spoke louder than the quiet 'Thank You' they muttered.
A Mastectomy is when a woman's breast is removed in order to remove cancerous breast cells/tissue. if you know anyone who has had a mastectomy, you may know that there is a lot of discomfort and pain afterward's. Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure. Let's give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 day's after surgery.
Mastectomy Bill In Congress
It takes 2 second's to do this and is very important.. Please take the time and do it real quick!
Breast Cancer Hospitalization Bill-Important legislation for all women.
Please send this to every one in your address book. If there was ever the time when our voices and choices should be heard, this is one of those time's. it will only 30 second's to go vote on this issue. There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Proction Act which will require Insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patient's undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the 'drive-through mastectomy' where women are forced to go home just a few hour's after surgery, against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached. Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on.
PLEASE!! Sign the petition by clicking on the web site below. You need not give more than your name and zip code number.

This takes about 2 seconds. PLEASE PASS THIS ON to your friend's and family. Thanks very much, I already signed the petition, now it is your turn to sign and pass this on to other people to sign. we can't let women suffer just because of their Insurance companies refuse to pay for longer stay's. let our voice's be heard.

I am a certified mastectomy fitter. Many of the women who have this surgery are traumatized by there experience following the surgery. The move em in and move em out attitude needs to end. Thank you for posting this very important discussion.

Thanks for posting this! I signed the petition and will pass it on to everyone in my address book. I can't believe that a bunch of insurance executives, the majority of whom are men, I'm sure, have now decided that mastectomies do not warrant at least 2-3 days in the hospital. Several good points are brought up here; this is a complicated medical procedure which leaves a woman physically weak and unable to properly care for herself in the immediate post-operative days. She needs assistance with dressing changes, drains, and exercises in order to prevent post-operative complications such as infection and the build-up of fluid in the affected arm, not to mention the fact that she will naturally be in pain. Add to that the emotional and psychological damage of having a cancer diagnosis in addition to the disfiguring surgery... Let's see how the men would respond if we were talking about testicular cancer!!!!!!!

Thank's for signing the petition and for passing it on to all of your friend's and family. I know if I had to have a mastectomy that I would want to stay in the hospital at least two or three day's just in case there was complication's. Insurance companies need to change there attitude about not paying for several day's in the hospital after the surgery. Your right maybe the insurance companies should do the same thing for testicular cancer surgery, only pay for one day stay and then the patient get's sent home.
