Should doctors help smokers?

I read an article in the news the other day that said as part of the UK's NHS cuts, smokers would no longer be allowed medical assistance for smoking related illnesses - they would have to go private. What do you all think about that?

This is one of the follies of socialized medicine. The government can decide what activities are worthy of medical support and which aren't. This makes about as much sense as saying that car accidents won't be covered anymore, since, if you don't drive, you won't get hurt in a car accident.

I agree with you on this. Since smoking is legal, I think that smokers should be treated. Everyone knows that smoking is dangerous, but since smokers are not committing any crimes i see no reason why their ailments should be ignored by the NHS. I like the way you compared it to a car accident, it's just simply a way of making more people suffer in order to save money.

I think that's very fair. In this day and age everyone knows the danger of smoking, so if they want to take the risk they should pay the cost.
