Pharming is the latest method used to scam people using the Internet. How commom is this? Have you had this happen to you? What is "Pharming"? Pharming redirects Internet users to a fraudulent website, even when the correct address is entered. There are two common ways pharming occurs. Hackers can change the host files on a computer by infecting it with a virus. Or, they can tamper with the computer's server software to enable them to capture an internet address that a user enters and replace it with an internet address for a fake Web site. Once at the phony Web site, unassuming victims are asked to provide personal information such as passwords and usernames that criminals then capture. What can you do? Do not access any Web sites that look suspicious or do not appear to be authentic. Also, make sure that all Web sites you access have addresses that begin with "https". These first five letters indicate that the site is secure. Keep in mind that seeing https:// does not guarantee that you are at a secure site. If you are unsure of a Web site's validity or are asked for anything out of the ordinary, contact the Web site before entering any information.
