My partner is trying to get me interested in playing chess. I am not very good at games. I am just not bothered about winning. I think taking part and enjoying it matters most. Do you enjoy chess? Is it enjoyed more by men or women? What is interesting about it?

Getting to know the pieces. - Plan a strategy and set some traps.
I do enjoy playing games in general. From soccer, to bowling, to scrabble, to chess. You are right to say that taking part and enjoying it matters most. I'm not too sure if the gender makes a difference in playing games or having interest in games. But for me, (example chess) i play it to have fun as well as a challenge. To see if i can out think my opponent. Some how, i personally think that guys feel on top of the world when they win something. you might just enjoy it. Give it a try. You never know till you try it. - Lyn

I think it is extremely boring. I was very good at maths and logic as a child so my dad got me started on chess. My dad thought I would like thinking ahead, making strategic moves. People that enjoy math, logic, IQ tests and stuff like that usually like chess. I did not. It is too slow and boring to me. I just do not have the patience for it. And yes - seems like more men than women enjoy a good chess game.

Might be that men have more time on their hands, while women have a full time job cleaning up after their men and really do not have all that time to waste.

Thanks for your excellent response. I do think I will find it boring but I will have a go at it. Your comment about some men is right. It made me laugh but it is true of my partner.

I used to love playing chess at school, I was taught at school by a good friend of mine, I found that I was good at it and I actually started running my own chess club! I never went professional or entered any competitions, because I wasn't competitive that way, I actually found the girls were the best players in my club! I was a sixth former and I got beat by a first year girl, I was very impressed, I hope she went pro, I never know I left school soon after.

My dad taught us this game when we were younger, only I and my younger brother caught up with my dad's interest. We once played against each other for weeks, eventually the score ended in a draw with both of us having 50 wins and 50 losses. My older sister and younger sister did not develop an interest for it. In the beginning, my dad would sometimes remove the queen at the start of the game to give us some edge in the game. Eventually through a chess book, we learned the advance strategies of the game like fork, pin, double check. What is interesting about the game is that you get to outsmart your opponent.

My dad is fond of chess, he won a championship game in their office. When we were younger he would encourage us to play it, we would play it but I think we just learned the moves of each charater. It is good game of the mind. But we prefer other group board games such as checkers and scrabble.

Yes I enjoy chess. Wehn I was litle I use to play it with my brother, now I don't have time, but when I see the table I give it a shot again with my brother. At my grandmas again I used to play with my relatives, someday my aunt got mad because I made a draw with her, my father started to argue with her, but it pass :P.

No, I have not got the patience for it. My hubby loves chess though and is really good at it, he even has won a couple of small tournaments years ago.

I like playing games like that. If my husband asks me to tell it with him, I will be glad to do so. We played some games like it in the past, it was likely that I lost all the time. I think this is made him happier:D

Hate to confess this, but I don't know how to play chess. I've had friends who played chess competitively, but I've not bothered to learn exactly how! I learnt Chinese chess (starting play positions are similar, with pawns on the first row) but never got very good at it either. but at least I could complete one full game of chinese chess. i think men enjoy chess more because it's strategic. Women can be less competitive and more communal, so we prefer shopping and chatting, and maybe team sports??

I've always enjoyed chess. The thing that I like most is the whole "strategy" aspect. Contemplating what the next few moves will be and how they'll turn out. I'm not very good at it, but I enjoy it.

yeah i do like it a lot but i cant find anybody to play with me koz like u they its a boring game. What is amazing about chess is that you have to decipher the moves of your oppponent which is something very difficult to do and needs lot concentration and so this make you fully immersed in the game.
