Obviously Mexico, LOL. I'm talking about a garage sale my MIL and I had the last couple days at my house. I can honestly tell you that over two days(the last day tomorrow) we've only seen one white family come through! My Spanish is flawed, but I'm doing alright. Here's my issue, I have a sign up saying "all prices firm" because we priced everything DIRT CHEAP, I mean clothes with the tags still on for like $.75 and they still want to haggle with me! I even had one woman steal from the garage sale and come back today! When I told her I knew what she was doing she got her 9 year old daughter to translate, and not wanting to get the child in an argument because the woman was being really hostile, I just asked them to leave. Thank goodness my hubby showed up when he did! It made me think about illegal immigrants, and how people like this are what give Mexicans a bad name. I was so irate. The kicker was the little girl said "my mom says she'll see you tomorrow". I'm hoping not, but they've been here 2 days already. I know it's silly, but do you call the police for someone stealing from the garage sale? What really made me hot is thinking my tax money is probably paying their rent!

Are you sure they're Mexican? Not to sound offensive, but not all Hispanic people are Mexican.
Anyway, sorry that you're having trouble communicating. I guess this is one of the reasons Spanish is offered in just about every high school in the US. Just be patient and embrace the magic of diversity; do all you can to communicate, not just through words, but through hand gestures, etc. Regardless of ethnicity, customers are customers.

I am not a racist person, don't get me wrong. One of my old employees, who is Mexican by the way, happened to be here when all of this was going on and even called them "filthy". She was as upset as I was. You're right, customers are customers, but should I put up with them stealing in my own home?! I think not. That's not a customer, customers pay, these people were jsut plain old theives. They trashed my garage and STOLE from me! Thanks for your response, I am aware that all Hispanics are not Mexican, but when a Mexican tells you these people are Mexican you believe it.

unfortunately, you are right. they are trying to teach Americans to speak another language so that they can understand someone who is a)in this country illegally or b) too lazy to learn the language of THIS country, English. i certainly wouldn't move to a foreign country and expect, no wait, demand they learn english to accommodate me. i've got one universal hand gesture for all of them.

I don't agree with stealing. So if she honestly stole, then I wouldn't let her come back to the sale.
My problem is, you said "people like this are what give Mexicans a bad name"
What does that got to do with anything? I mean just because someone does something wrong, no matter what the race is, you should never think badly of the other race because of someone elses bad doings.
And why would you think your tax money is paying their rent? Don't judge a book by it's cover.

Let me attempt to explain foxxee. I have a group of apartment buildings across the street from my house, over the course of a year there has been nothing but trouble from these apartments, when it never used to be like that. They have been bought out from Chicago slumlords who rent a lot of Section 8 and low income. In the last two months three of my neighbors have been robbed, and one lady even caught the perpetrator selling her jewelry out of the trunk of his car! So much for nice neighborhood. I don't think badly of any race for one persons actions, I have black friends, Asian friends and Hispanic friends. However not everyone is as open minded or educated as I am. Racism exists, and I am not going to turn a blind eye as to why some people feel the way they do, I get it. Maybe all they've had to deal with is people like the ones at my garage sale, who tried to come back today,by the way. Why do I think our tax money is paying their rent? The building I watched them come from is notorious for illegal immigrants, and they didn't speak any English! They had to have their kid translate! You can't even get hired at McDonalds if you can't speak or understand English. Do you think people who are against the immigration bill are against it because everyone crossing our border is an upstanding member of society?

That does not surprise me as they always looking for something for nothing. The kicker is they are getting it from our government.
I think stealing from a garage sale is still "theft by taking" which is a criminal offense. Until the item is purchased by paying, it is still your property.

Wow, thats awful! I cant believe anyone would steal from a garage sale! That stinks. And now she keeps coming back..greeeat. I've never had this happen, but what I have gotten at mine are people that stay FOREVER and chit chat. I'm talking over an hour, and never buy anything, and then they let their kids go nutso with the toys I have for sale, and strewing them all over the yard instead of nice and neat like I had them. blah! I get frusterated just thinking about it! If she comes again, I would IMMEDIATLY tell her to leave and if she doesn't have her daughter translate that you will be calling the authorities at once as it is tresspassing after you ask someone to leave your property and they dont.
I hope the rest goes well for you! I love going to garage sales and I'm usually terrible and never try and talk people down..lol I just pay their asking price or leave!
