Problems with Alcohol

I am reading more and more these days that young people are building up problems for themselves in later life by drinking heavily. When I was in my early twenties, without noticing I became a very heavy drinker. The problem was that as a musician, I was exposed to alcohol every night of the week, and started to notice when I was going through a separation and divorce that it acted like an anaesthetic to my emotions. I got to get the feeling that nothing was a problem and I would deal with it without a problem. And then as it got a harder grip on me, I started spending more than I was earning on alcohol and felt in a state of oblivion to my mounting debt also.
I stopped feeling so intoxicated and each morning, the most important thing to me was quenching my thirst in a nearby bar. Then for some reason, I saw what I was doing to myself and quit drinking completely for about 2 years. Now I can take it or leave it and see it a very expensive way to ruin my health.
What are your opinions on the "drinking" culture amongst young people today? What dangers can you see in this modern culture for heavy drinking? Or do you think, that most will be OK anyway?

i have a poem in answer to this :-
I read this in the paper,
And it really made me think;
That a quarter of all road accidents
Can be blamed... directly... on drink.
Now statistics, they tell you, will never lie,
But be wary of how they're used;
You need your wits about you,
It's easy to get confused.
If a quarter of accidents are had by drunks,
Then sober people have all the rest;
That's 75% if I'm not mistaken,
... (My maths never were the best).
But I'm not entirely stupid,
And I plan to stay alive;
So I'm gonna start driving drunk,
I'm three times more likely to survive.
but it just a funny poem don take it seriously.........cheers
