hi everyone, well as most of you know i work in a hotel and i work nights, when i applied for the job i applyed to work days, when they offered me the job they said can i work nights for 3 months then go onto days after that so i thought ok that sounds good cos iv never done nights before, well the 3 months came and no mention about days so i asked my manager when i would be going onto days he said were still looking for someone to cover you on nights, well still 9 months later im on nights, last week i got taken into the office about me being off sick and my manager said again were still looking for someone to cover you so i thought ok i have waited 9 months im sure i can wait a little bit longer, then i get a phone call from work a few days later from another manager saying they have not got no room for me to go onto days, they offered me part time on days but i cant do that as i have bills to pay and a house to pay for, so i am now stuck on nights so i have decided to look for another job so i can be on days and have a normal life as i am only 20 and havent got much of a social life with my friends as i work weekends too, i am also thinking of complaining to head office about this as i feel they have just strung me along all the time.
what would you do?

I think I would complain to the head office about it so that it can at least be documented as to what has been going on. It's not right that your manager did that to you. My old boss was like that too. You should definitely go look for another job if talking to the main office doesn't help. You're too young to have no social life, and working nights is no fun at all. Good luck on this hon.

I think you should look for a job that suits you better. You are young and you have experience. Take a new job and after you have found it quit the old one. It has never been good for me to complain. I learned just to go on. They might be sorry if you leave and say why haven`t you told us before but if you had that would have caused you problems.
Just find a new job, give notice and forget about the old one.

I am not too sure if you would have a case sweetheart , You would probably have to have some kind od written proof , years ago when my middle son had a storemans job with a building firm they said he would become head storeman , he loved the job and stayed on and refused a job offer from BT , months later the other firm payed him off , we were all angry but had no written proof they had said that m good luck though pal and YES I would have a go , nothing ventured nothig gained , It would be well worth the try but don't get your hopes built up too much , I wouldn't let them off without at least giving it a go , they might give you a lump sum just to save hastle xx

About time too, you have been undervalued and undermined for far too long. Somebody will realise that a loyal worker who will at times stay outside the working hours to finish a job which was started, is honest and competent with a cool head is very valuable.
Good luck and I hope we are soon reading about your fabulous new job.

While you are looking for that job you could have a look around the internet for a free course you can do in your spare time, that always looks good on a CV and the extra qualification can't hurt.
I learned how to build web sites and got a Grade 2 qualification from wwww.vision2learn.co.uk.
I hope that thought is useful x

Hello mel,
It is nice of you to take time from work to be on mylot and to share your views about your job problems. I feel the manager should have been frank with you if he only wanted you to do night shifts at the hotel and not a day job instead of giving lame excuses every now and then. I feel you should complain to head office as the fellow was taking you for a ride. And do keep doing the current job till you fnd another one so as to pay your bills. And hopefully in the meanwhile you will get a good day job. happy job hunting. My best wishes are with you. Cheers:)

that sounds like a very good plan to me =D
i doubt the head office would do anything though even if you complain about them "Strung you along all the time" so you can work night shift for 9 months already.
If the Head office doesn't reply you can always go to government organisations to complain about the hotel which you work in so that you get a fairer treatment...
But in your situation, having "bills to pay and a house to pay for" i would stick to the job for the time being and find another day time job. after you find the day time job which is stable and suitable for you, then complain and ask for compensation, get some money out of them for lying and wasting your time =D
Hope it turns out fine for you :)

Well - if you can get a job with a company in cometition with the firm you are with now, even better. Gotta love those stories that start off as a horror story for someone who was given a hard time at their present workplace, & then in the end, the victim is actually happy at his new job working for a firm in competition with the firm that was cruel to him.

A new career? Like being a mechanic? Then if you remove engine, you will at least know how to put it back in, & maybe even make it work better.

Hi Mel_87,
That sounds like an annoying situation and I can understand your frustration with them promising you to put you on days but it then never happens. My advice would be to try and look for a new job, you have 9 months hotel experience behind you at least, so I'm sure it won't be a problem:-)
You could take it to head office, but unless it was in your contract from the beginning, I'm afraid they won't be able to do anything about it. would you be able to do some dayshifts and some night shifts in the meantime?
Eishing you all the bst, please keep us posted!

Hi, I will suggest you not to change your job at the moment. From my experience, I know that working experience will be an advantage. Therefore, if you really think of changing a job, work for 1 whole year or 2 years before you do that. You will always get higher pay with working experience when you change to a new company. So, since u r currently working in a hotel, u can always work for another hotel. Good luck mel.

thank you for your advise but unfortunatly i dont think i can stay here for another 4 months as i am finding it hard to get to work on nights as there r no buses at that time of the night and taxi cost a fortune that is another reason why i wanted to go onto days, but i might have to end up staying as i might not find another job in 4 months lol

Looking for jobs is old fashion. What I would suggest is starting a business where you can keep people for work under.Be your own boss.Life is short.Make the most out of it.

It isn't really fair what they have done to you, but unless you had a written contract saying that you would only work nights for three months to be followed by daytime work, I don't really think there is anything you can do, but you can always try. They seem to have tried to been accommodating, even though this wasn't a good solution. Frankly, I wouldn't take a full time night job because honestly no one wants to work nights so I guess they took you for a sucker and kept you on nights for almost a year. I hope you ventures go well and I wish you luck in your future job endevors.

thank you for your comment and i think your right about me not having it in writing, but not to worry as i am not expecting anything out of it just to let them know what sort of person they have employed to be a manager and is pushing away staff and giving the company a bad name really.

I think you are right about looking for another job sweetheart! I would also write to the head of personnel as I am sure in all this time there should have been space for you on day shift - someone somewhere must have left or been sacked! I think you are doing the right thing sweety - it is usually easier to find a job when you are working so looking now is for the best! Good Luck Mel - hope something terrific comes along! xxx

I hear ya. I work at a hotel at nights. It is kind of a bummer considering I miss out on my family. I also work weekends. I don't mind though because I work 4 days a week the pay is great and I don't have to worry about work day traffic that much. Well on Mondays and Tuesdays, but Tuesday I am off for three days.
My suggestion is don't quit yet. Start faxing your resume to all the hotels in your area. With your hotel experience you won't have a hard time finding another job. Just don't quit your night time one until you have secured another one. Let the new one know that you have to give two weeks before you start a lot of employers understand plus when you have a job, it is easier to get a new one. I hope this helps.

What does a night auditor do? I've been wanting to try this, but did not know what it requires.
