How effective is language as a mode of communication?

Say for instance when people say they like the colour 'Red'....what are they referring to? The colour that describes a sunset? A colour thatz associated wid love and danger wid the same aggression? A colour depicts heat and warmth, but also stands for anger wrath and agression? All these stand for different aspects........yet we sum it up wid one word- RED. On the basis of this, how far does language fall in communicating what we intend to say?
