Do you always have to buy the top of the line?

Some people feel that nothing but the top of the line os everything is worth.
They don't research, they don't compare, they just assume that the top of the line is best than everything else and nothing else compares.
They also feel it is important to have it. But is it? Does it really add in what's really important?
I sure like to have good stuff. Things that work well and serve their purpose. But I find that I can get that without going to extremes.
I always compare everything from prices to performance and find that sometimes what the top of the line gives me is not worth the extra expense.
What are your feeling on this?

Not all the time. There are sometimes when purchasing those that are high brand or 'top of the line' are better than the generic ones, but if there is a comparable brand, then I really don't care and would probably purchase something on the lower price scale. I think the key is, like you said, comparing. I do a lot of comparing and I can usually get good things from what others might consider lower brands, whether it is clothes, household supplies, etc.

Yes I completely agree with you. Sometimes top of the line is really better but often we can find comparable things that don't yet have the name or the fame and that are comparable in quality but lower in price.
Comparing, researching, waiting a bit, asking other people.... all helps:)

Isn't it hard work and time consuming to compare prices and performance? Is the time spent worth the savings? What is the item you are buying that deserves such a time consuming attention? These are the questions I would ask myself before I decide if the item is worth going the extra mile just to save a few cents. Imagine the price of an item at one shop is $100 and another is $105. You spend hours and even transport charges to source for one that sells at $90. Is it a bargain?

I like to think of myself as being reasonable. meaning if something is higher priced, but will last longer or is better quality, than I will pay the extra money for it. But if something is just as good being cheaper or "generic" I will buy that. I don't like spending money, so I always try to get the best deal. If I know I must pay extra for quality, I may wait until it is on sale, or go to a lower priced store to get it.

My girl friend is always one to buy brand names, But I really dont see the point in buying a £200 pair of trainers when a £30 pair does exactly the same.
When it comes to gadgets, My PC, Laptop, Phone etc I often buy the newer leading model but this is becasue they have more functions

Just because it has a well known name doesn't make it the best. There are some very good no-name brands on the market that work just as well or better! Why pay the price when you can get the same for less money?

I don't always think the top of the line is the best, as its somebodies opinion that its the top of the line product. I read reviews from other people to help decide, if I should consider a brand. Its important to look at the price, quality of the item and how long will the product be used, as why pay a lot of money for something you can save some money on and the item lasts just as long as a different brand. Some people just buy the first item they see without checking any other stores, but this can cost them $100's of dollars more for the item. I understand if the product is less than a dollar difference, then you should buy it because it would cost more in gas, so you would end up spending more in the end.

I have often found lower priced items are just as good, if not better quality than some of the higher prices things. I try to do my research, especially when buying a more expensive item. Sometimes it is worth the extra expense, but many times it is not.

Nah.
I buy what I like the look of, some of the time that is the top of the line but generally I do like value for money and a lot more choice these days.
I would splash out and buy a laptop for £1000 if it didn't run, look and last a few years. (5) at the leasts. :)

P.s would be just a waste.

Oh yeah - my aunt is terrible of buying things simply because they cost more. Note - I didn't say "top of the line"
I have litteraly seen her buy something at one store that cost more than the exact same thing at another store. She will of course argue that they are different.
I'm the kind that researches the heck out of something before I invest any money in it however. And just because something is the "best" doesn't mean I will buy it. I buy things that are the best for the price and for what I need them for. Sure this cork screw can also slice bread and call lassie if I get stuck in a well but all I need is a cork screw you know? lol
I don't understand people who throw money everywhere and get stuff simply because it costs more...blows my mind.

It depends on the item and what I'm using it for. I don't usually buy the most expensive things I see. I try to compare items and buy things from companies I have bought from in the past whose products I have been satisfied with (i never buy epson because of a really bad experience). Hope this helps!

I dont worry ove name brand products. Honestly if I can get the samet thing for half the price then I am going to get the cheaper product. If there is a sale on a name brand product then I will take advantage of the sale otherthan that I get the name brand things.

I do usually buy brand names over others...But I don't buy things JUST because of the brand name or just because of it being top of the line. I definitely do research and I always try things just to see. Price is a big thing anyhow because I don't have all the money in the world to spend. But I definitely don't buy the top of the line just because it's top of the line. If it's the best of the best than maybe, but if it's just decent... I wouldn't buy if there was something better.
