Do you think there is a way to make discussions more interactive here?

I noticed most discussions..mine too..that there is the thread and then a response..No one really interacts with anyone else..hardly..How is it we call these discussions..when nothing is discussed. Would you say that is more like a survey..or debate? I would love to see a thread take off and people talk to each other.. Is it because most people are here to get a big buck?

Hmm... I guess maybe you need to make more friends? Normally discussions become interactive when you know one another. And if the topic is interesting, then a lively discussion will occur. :) Don't give up, keep trying! :D

I like to comment more..but when I try to comment on another's comment some thread starte's take offense saying we are talking to people on their thread..I think discussions mean you talk to whomever is involved in the thread..isn't this correct:)+

The point is ..wizard..why would any one object to a discussion taking place on their discussion..Wouldn't it be all one sided if it was restricted to those who reply and then one who posted???+

Oh that! Lol.. there are people, and there are people. :P I for one am not against people talking on my thread. You can see often enough on my discussions that people do have their mini-chats and leave their own comments. I don't mind at all and my friends know. I plus them all too lol. :PP If someone does not like you talking on their threads, then don't... I would think few would actually take a belligerent stance against you. If you are not sure, just ask. I don't think that many would mind that much really...

Yeah, this would be better if it was more like most forums where you can quote people and respond directly to them. It's just not what I'm used to in a forum. I don't like it really.

Yeah, I'll get used to it. I shouldn't have said I don't like it. I just meant I need to get used to it.

I think, through active participation we can make the discussions lively and interactive..

In what way should we participate? should we do something different then what we are doing now..? How do we get people within the thread to interract with one another?__+

I agree with you. It is sad that we cannot have some lively discussions like on normal forums. But this is the nature of myLot. 1) You are asked to answer a question. It is not about debating the question. Only your answer can be debated by other people. 2) The rules of myLot don't permit friendly chit chat as each answer has to be relevant to the question... and furthermore... myLot does not pay you for two liners chit chat. 3) Debating and chit chat encourages personal abuse... which is all too common on normal forums. 4) While I don't find myLot exciting because of the lack of chit chat... myLot has achieved one good thing... it has kept the teenagers away by not allowing chit chat... those same teenagers which take control of every forum and chase the adults away.

What I do ..when I am not responding to replies on my discussions ..is go to the side panel on mylot that says .."discussions friends started" "discussions I have started" You can tell by the last person answered if you have a new reply on your discussion. If I am listed as the last to post..I know I am cought up..if someone else is then I know I need to jump in and reply;)+

Well..I think that discussions allow for some conversations..don't you.. I know it's not chit chat though..since the time that lapses between post and response can be hours or even days. I do enjoy a "good discussion" ..where people are really "discussing" what is brought up+

There is also another problem with myLot which prevents discussions. On normal forums... you only get notified by email once for each thread you participate in. So if ten persons answer your question while you are away... you only get one email... not 10 like you do on myLot. Furthermore... you get an email each time one of your friends ask a question. And some people have a lot of friends. While some friends ask a lot of questions. Because of all this... a lot of people on myLot have turned their notification "off" because they felt they were receiving too many emails. Without your notification "on"... you cannot have a real discussion because you don't know when someone has replied to your answer. Furthermore... it was only a couple of months ago that myLot introduced notification reply on "comments".

This is a community for discussion based more on the idea of a forum. You look for something you are interested in and can read comments people have made about it or post a comment of your own and see if people respond. It is not a one on one chat like in a chat room or instant message program. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. I like myLot because of all the different topics available.

I understand what forums are..but all I see is one on one interaction..I would love to see mylot folks talk to more people on the thread then the thread starter..but maybe it's not the way mylot will be;)+_

I think I see what you mean now. Sometimes people will make a comment to a comment, but usually it is just to the thread starter. Because of your question, I will be more aware of comments I could comment on besides just the thread starter. Maybe you have started a new trend!

I dont know if it's starter a new trend or wondering about the definition of a discussion.. I remember in school when the teacher said we were having discussion groups...we got together and all talked on the topic back and forth..Usually more can be gleaned from such ways then just ask a question and get an answer;)+

I'm pretty sure this is set up to be less interactive than a forum. I don't know why.

I think that because of the great size of this site ..it's becoming more and more a challenge to keep up with replies;)+

sometimes you see on some of the discussions people with get on and respond to someone elses answers but thats not to often. other than that i think be bit hard to have discussions on the subjects. its more like a survey really when you think about it to get other people opinions on things

That is how I am seeing it..It appears that most people see it as a survey..not a discussion or forum..but it is suppose to be a discusion; or should I say this was the original aim of mylot;)+

Do you know...the people are bored including me. Almost one and the same discussions. The problem is that we are more influenced by money and we dont care too much of the quality of the discussion. We want just more and more and more replies, but this is not allways good for the conversation. We post something as survey, but there are some good debates too.

There can be many innovative ways to make the discussions more interactive........ polls, surveys, debates do help in this case but i feel the most important factor is your writing skills. If we write our posts in simple, lucid lauange, honest then it automatically invites the reader to post a rsponse. The contents of the post matter a lot and the size of the post should not be too big. This is what I feel.

Simplicity is so lovely, isn't it..Sometime I run into discussion that I look at and wonder what in the world are they talking about.. I think intellectuals tend to forget that not everyone has the same amount of education;)+

Precisely, respected madam......... Einstein once said that the true genius is one who makes "complex things simple not the other way round".........simplicity is the essence of life.

littlefranciscan, I agree whole heartedly. Its hard to get to know people at www.mylot.com when there is no debate. Often it just feels like people posting responses. We are each others best advocates, and the advice and friendship we can get from other people here at www.mylot.com should be valued.

What would you say is a "boring person" ..Would you say they are people who say the minium amount in their answers ? I think some people don't think about what they are saying..don't you?+

Hello.littlefransiscan,i think in order to make the discussions more interactive, the topics themselves may be very important, for some topics, different people may have very different opinions on them, there should be good debate on those topics. Also,it depends on whether those members who reply to you will come back to your comments or not.

I agree with you completely easy888:) I am still trying to understand why someone thinks they own a discussion which is made on a site that pays people to discuss???:)+

To have a real discussion take off, it requires more than just participants. To have a real solid discussion, much time is involve and in myLot, we are not paid for subsequent responses and comments. Though most people are not here for money, I still believe it plays a part. Who can really be interested in having a ongoing discussion when the turnaround could be more than a day. Besides, for a solid discussion with many responses, it is hard to find back one's response to respond back. At times, I do have comments to the poster's comments, but to browse thru the pages patiently to find my comments, it is just too inefficient... I simply forget it. lol. So in conclusion, it is not that people do not want a discussion, I find it difficult to have a real ongoing discussion.

Hi littlefransiscan, I think you have raised a interesting point, I think it has a bit to do with you friends list and also for me Ive noticed when you relook at the discussion it starts at the top of the discussions, I wonder if it was easier to go back to the place were you commented if it would open this up alot more. For example if you have 3 pages of discussions to go to before you find your post it is much harder than if you could go back to that point from your inbox. I hope this makes sense though I fear I rambled.lol

I think you are right..trying to finish up responding to a discussion before creating a new one..I have found, however in my efforts to repond..more and more jump in as My responding keeps the topic on top: sigh;)+

I don't think most mylotters would change their habits: just to answer a question and go to the following one. But, perhaps, it would be a good idea to open another section (like they have done with blogs) with forums about different topics. There, those interested in a certain topic, would be able to discuss once and again about a specific subject.

I think that certain discussions will earn more than others, definitely. Also, it's the way the discussions are presented. Instead of asking "What's your favorite thing about mylot?" It's better to be specific and original. People love originality.
