Close encounters of the snake kind.

I have had several encounters with snakes in the wild, I don't count the 6 foot or so one that the sister of a girlfriend had. Twice I have grazed the head of a snake that was laying in wait for pray by a trail, once as a kid and once as an adult. In both cases the snake and I ran, though the snake was much faster. As a kid a friend and I were on a trail and a snake took off and he said there was another one that struck at me but missed. My mother and I were sweeping wet leaves off the driveway after a rain once and found several baby water moccasins which are snakes that live mainly in the water and the closest water was several miles away. My dad and I were dove hunting and there was a dead tree in the tank ( a man made pond for cattle, etc.) with hundreds of water moccasins in the tree. There have been others, but that is enough.

Funny, right before posting in this discussion about snakes I was talking about Kurt Russel...anyway. There are a lot of snakes in my back yard, especially during the rainy season. The little buggers like the wet grass. They're all small though, and I don't really know what kind of snakes they are. But we don't take chances so we just kill them.

Lots of snakes are beneficial, but it is better to be safe.

My first pet were 2 snakes, both Boa Constrictors. I was around 3-5 years old when they were brought home by my uncle from the province and we kept them as pets ^_^ I miss the weekends when I'd go with my dad and uncles to the terrace to shoot small birds and feed the snakes ourselves. I was in charge of holding the snakes while they were being fed. They were wrapped around my neck and arms ^_^

I always think of the Phillipines as being tropical, but don't really know if all of it is. My snake encounters were mostly in Texas with one of the grazed head ones being in New Mexico where the climate ranges from moderate to desert. Water moccasins are very poisiness, my uncle got bitten by a very small baby one when he was a child and was very ill and almost lost his thumb because of it.

Philippines is a tropical country ^_^ Most of the snakes here (which are loose) make vacant lots their homes. Almost all vacant lots here in my country have weeds taller than people, so it's easy for the snakes to hide there. Also, snakes are present in our forests and mountains..there are a lot of them there too ^_^
