do a foul is necessary?

last day , i played basketboll with my friends . and everyone of us was exciting when i do a big foul to a friend of mine that i can not believe i have done that. he stumbled with rolling over the groud out of the court. at that time , without thinking something else he lose his temper to hit me .after that we said no words with eachother
until now. i have been thinking that whether a foul is necessary or not.

in basketball, a foul is necessary to stop other team from scoring. It is also a way of stopping the momentum of the opposite team. Sometimes we commit fouls accidentally.

thank you for your response at first. your opinion is accessable and advisable to the point in the formal competition with both of the teams hoping to beat each other. but we play the ball just in the hope of enjoyment and happiness no matter who is the last winner. so ....
