California CPA exam

I am working towards taking the CPA exam this year or early next year. Has anyone taken the CPA exam in California that could give some advice on the process, exam, and prep materials? The prep classes seem very expenssive, is it worth th cost or are the study guides just as helpful?? Thanks!
