Actually Windows XP software contains the most common sound drivers. But nowadays the sound card are made by various companies and each have their own drivers.
All the mother board integrated sound card have drivers in the motherboard CD itself.
Run the motherboard CD. You will find the Audio driver setup. Run that setup. You will sure to get the sound.

I think you lost your sound because you laptop is using parts that are not incluide, int the drivers for windows xp, but it would be for a virus, once, I lost the sound for a virus so you need to check if it is a virus, I had a lot of problems finding drivers on internet, but since it is a laptop I think it will not hard, maybe you need to join a forum a request for the drives or look on internet , there is some databases with a lot of drivers, but it is hard to find the drivers that works for you computer, maybe you should check the web site of your laptop manufacturer and look if they have it for download, or write to the laptop manufacturer, once I find the drivers in that way, or you can check on eBay for the cd drivers for you laptop, I think it will not hard to find in that way but will cost a few.
