Hi daphne...I guess I am almost the same age as your mom. You see, I'll also be celebrating my 50th birthday next month. We have the same birth year as your mom. Make that day special for her. Your color motif should be gold as she is turning into the golden year...surpirse her with gold balloons, gold flowers, greetings on walls. Then treat her to a spa for a facial cleansing or body massage. Prepare her favorite foods...if you're thowing a party, invite her close friends who will give her a tribute, and tokens of appreciation. Of course, thank the Lord by attending mass or Church service or whatever you have. Choose her favorite dress or thing and gift her with it as a token of your love for her. The possibilities are endless, be creative and she will have a real memorable day. Good luck....

I too was born in 1957 and will turn 50 in July. Don't do the gag gift thing like walkers, canes or depends. Nobody likes to have the fact that they are aging shoved in their face! Get everybody to join you at a restaurant. Tell your mother that you are taking her out to dinner. She will be so surprised to find herself at a restaurant filled with her family and friends.

I'm terrible at organizing events for birthdays and things - I can never even decide what to do for my own birthday!
I think it depends on what kind of person your mom is - is she the outgoing party type, or the quiet, more reserved type? If she's anything like me, a meal out somewhere nice with the family could be good - give her a treat and take her somewhere really posh or something! Or what about a health spa? A manicure or massage session might be nice? I got my mom a couple of treatments for her 40th, eyebrow waxing, eyelash tinting, tanning, and all pampery stuff like that!
If you are throwing a party, try to make sure all her old friends are there, it'll be good for them to catch up since this is such a big occasion. As far as entertainment for the party is concerned - i'd keep it quite simple, too much going on would distract from the real reason you are there... unless you're all quite open minded, then you could hire a male stripper for her - that could be funny ;p
For my mom's last birthday I got her a personalized birthday card, from http://www.moonpig.com they print your personalized message inside and send it to you when it's done - my mom really liked that!
Good luck with the party planning, hope you all have a great day!
