Hypothetically - suppose you were a woman with a few kids recently divorced from an alcoholic or someone else with a self-induced "illness". Would you feel guilty asking for child support? Would it matter if he had a full-time job or not?

No, I would not feel bad about it at all. It would be their choice to keep drinking and drinking and drinking. Any child deserves to be supported. I'm always for child support.

In my opinion a child support is a must. A parent has a responsibility for his or her children. And it is the right of a child to be nurtured by his parents.I will feel not guilty for asking for a child support. But in your given scenario, if the father or the partner is not capable of giving financial support, i will not waste my time asking for nothing. If he has a full time job, he should be giving a financial assistance. No if's and but's, he should be responsible enough for that, he must allocate a budget for the kids. But if he has nothing to give because he has no job or any other source of income, i will understand. But at least he should help in some other important matters, even if money is not involved anymore.
