Do you think a person could simply survive off of vegetables and fruit?

Two summers ago, I took off a tremendous amount of weight eating nothing but salads, with added peas, nuts and beans for proteins. And, my spouse was very skeptical at first, but later he loved the thinner new me. Since then I've gone off the diet and gained a lot of weight. And, I'm thinking about doing it again. This time, I know I'd have to stay on the diet forever to maintain the weight loss. Do you think that a person can eat nothing but vegetables and fruit as a lifestyle and still thrive? Are there any missing food componets that would be essential to health that can't be obtained from fruits and veggies?

I think its possible...i couldnt do it myself as a lifelong thing cause I love my red meat and chicken LOL ok and cheese too LOL but we are doing a 2 week detox of just raw fruits and veggies and plenty of water...then I'll slowly work in healthy meats etc etc... You said you went off your diet but you didnt say what type of eating habits you aquired AFTER leaving the diet and were you exercising at all?

Of course they can. Lots of people do, they are called vegetarians or vegans depending on if they will eat animal by products such as milk and eggs. I think you can get all your vitamins from a vegetarian diet but you would have to be know a lot about it. Some people think you can just give up meat and eat anything and everything else and be a true vegetarian - it doesn't work that way.

I do think thats possible but oh so boring! In time you will get tired of eating like that. Its good to reward yourself with some meat every once in awhile. For me I couldnt live like that. I dont think its right to deprive ourselves. But thats only my opinion. I wish you luck with it.

Obviously vegitarians do just that. BUT i think there are plenty of vitamins and minerals and GOOD fat that you can only get from meats. I say eat lean meat sporadically. You know like once a week have a steak and veggies. Or Chicken and veggies. It's okay to eat meat just watch what kind of meat and how much of it you're eating! Best of Luck!

Fruits and vegetables are healthy for you but i do not think a person would survive if this is what they only eat for the rest of their lives. I say this because a person should be also eating meats, poultry and fish. They also contain some fat that a person needs( but not too much) They should consider also eating whole wheat bread. In other, words they should follow the food pyramid

I think it's possible if you can get past the cravings. That's been my hard part. My body starts to crave things like starch and carboydrates. and like you said, as long as you eat enough protein you should be good. But don't forget things like calcium, folic acid and omega-3. Those are important for women. Walnuts are an excellent source of omega-3. Maybe add some cottage cheese to your fruit for calcium. Oh, boy i"m gettting hungry for a big fat salad!

Why not? After all, we do have many vegetarians around. I think there is something missing from vegetables and fruits that is necessary for the diet though. I can't remember what but it can be found in mushrooms. So if you eat fruits, vegetables and mushrooms, you have a healthy diet.

as long as you are taking in enough protien for your body to keep its energy up it does not matter what you eat your body will be fine. I know plenty of people who do not eat any meat at all and they are very healty. I would ask your doc what is the normal amount of protien you should be taking in for your age and make sure you at least get that amount a day.

I believe that it is possible. I believe that it is what God intended. I think if you ate just fruits and vegetables you could be a very healthy person. I believe that you lost your weight the heathiest way possible. I wish that I could do that for any length ot time but I just don't have the will power. My husband is a meat eater and I couldn't go veggie if I wanted.I wouldn't last long with him eating steaks and chops in front of me.LOL!

Sure its possible, it may not be healthy but I'm sure its possible. There are other ways to go about losing weight. Just eat a low fat/low carb diet. Even some of the two won't hurt. I had a friend go on the south beach diet and he lost about 50 pounds and he was 215-220 when he started losing. There are ways to eat foods you like and still lose weight just don't over do it....and working out doesn't hurt either.

That's sounds cool. It seems healthy to me but yes, there are some missing food groups that are also healthy for you ,just eat them in moderation.

Well, I wont give a scientific reply to this. You can survive with only fruits and vegetablesif you really have to or want to. But it will be tempting lol.

If you know how to do it properly, a vegetarian diet is the healthiest dieton Earth. You just have to know how to get your protein and whatnot. Eat nuts, beans, legumes. Keep in mind, vegetarians can still eat eggs, but if you are attempting to lose weight, i would eat them sparingly. No more than 2 a day. There is even a grain (whos nameescapes me atthis moment) that is considered a "perfect protein." There are soy alternatives for most meat products, even vegetarian turkey roast and vegetarian cold cuts and vegetarian microwave meals. Try Yves products for things like soy ground (substitue for ground meat) and cold cuts. Try Amy's products for microwave meals. TryBoca for things like soy burgers. Try Morningstar Farms for things like veggie chicken nuggest, veggie buffalo wings, and veggie chicken patties. GOOD LUCK!

I think so since there are a number of vegetarians out there and they are doing pretty well. There are a lot of debates by doctors regarding this issue. Some claim that it is healthy to eat only fruits and vegetables while some claim that we should add meat and fish to our diet because vegetables contain only micronutrients and that for our body to survive we should also have macronutrients that come from fish and meat. I guess this is very much confusing to us laymen. So I think we should stick to what works best for our body. As they say, everything in moderation.

Of course they could survive, but to be completely healthy, they would really have to plan what they eat. However, some people go to complete extremes and still survive, such as being a fruitarian. Check out this guy. Insane. http://www.fruitarianfitness.com/
