We use various oils for cooking. Olive oil, sunflower oil, palm oil, coconut oil, gingily oil, rice bran oil and many other oils are used in various countries. In our place Kerala in south India people mainly use coconut oil. Coconut is the main crop in our state. We use sun flower oil and gingily oil also. What oil do you mainly use for cooking? Are you aware of the collesterol level in that particular oil? Do you believe that excess use of oil in food is harmful to health? Which oil do you think less harmfull?

I love olive oil. I use it for about 95% of my cooking. Vegetable oil, canola or corn oil will come in second. This depends mainly on what is on sale at the grocery store. ;)
I recently discovered sesame oil, and that has a very unique flavor. My hubby and I love it... the kids not so much. They think it's a horrible smell. I don't, it smells wonderful as it's cooking!

NO, my philosophy is, if I want it, I'm going to cook it, and they will eat it, too. If I put their meal preferences first every night, we'd be eating pizza and hot dogs every day. Not really my cup of tea.
I just put the food in front of them, and tell them they need to give it a try. They they are allowed something different if they don't like the meal. That's how I got my kids to eat vegetables. My son was so sure he didn't like brocolli. Now, he requests it at meal times! Eventually, the kids will feel the same about my using sesame oil in my cooking. :)

The "ideal" cooking oil should contain higher amount of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and with minimal or no saturated fats and trans fats.
Good Cooking Oils:
canola oil, flax seed oil, peanut oil, olive oil, non-hydrogenated soft margarine,
safflower oil, sunflower oil, corn oil.
Bad Cooking Oils:, Vegetable shortening, Hard margarine
Butter, Palm oil, Palm kernel oil, Coconut oil

when i can afford it it has to be extra virgin Olive Oil, when i cant afford it, its vegitable oil. However, i have recently discovered peanut oil and love cooking with this. Now and agin i make my own oils, particularly i make chilie and garlic oil. These make nice gifts and add a definite taste to cooking

certainly, I take one bottle of extr vergin olive oil and put in it either ten fresh red chilies, or ten peeled cloves of garlic. I then re seel the bottle with wax and leave in a dark place for 12 months. The chilie or garlic infuses with the oil creating a quite different oil
blessed be

I am fron India too.We use sesame oil, also called gingelly oil for pickles preapred specially in our households.Normally for cooking I use sunflower oil mainly and sometimes vegetable oil.I have also used canola and soya oil before but not anymore.I use olive oil when I prepare pasta, pizza etc.I think that gingelly/sesame oil is said to be most beneficial for heart.I have heard that palm oil is also good for health even though it solidifies at room temp. This was told to me by a very senior doctor some years ago.I donot know the truth behind it though and never use it in my cooking.Excess oil as any excessive food is bad for health.Moderation in everything is the key to good health,I believe.

We also use gingelly oil while preparing pickles. For almost any other cooking we use coconut oil or sunflower oil. Yes you are right in saying excessive use of oil is harmful. Also oil once used should not be used again. The charred particles in that oil is very much harmful to health, it is told by doctors.
Thank you for your comments.

I use Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I read that this is a good oil for you in moderation. Canola oil is the cheaper oil in this neck of the woods but I don't like it to cook with it and I think it is less healthy. I would like to try Coconut oil but here in Canada it is too expensive.

I use olive oil for stir fry, bake ,broil and ,grill .But i use peanut oil for deep fried .Some times i do like to use sesame oil on my food to enhance the taste of food. The reason why i use peanut oil for deep fried other then olive oil or vegetable oil because peanut oil has the highest smoke point.
Smoke point is the temperature to which an oil can be heated before it begins to smoke and discolor, which means the oil is decomposing. Peanut oil's smoke point is 450°F, compared to extra-virgin olive oil (405°F), canola oil (400°F), and butter (350°F). For stir-frying, a small amount of sesame oil (smoke point 410°F) is sometimes added with the peanut oil, to enhance the flavor of the dish.
So peanut oil in my choice to fry everything such as chicken, deep fried turkey, fish ,meat ball ,and others.
According to the research the following oil is considered the good cooking oil:
canola oil
flax seed oil
peanut oil
olive oil
non-hydrogenated soft margarine
safflower oil
sunflower oil
corn oil
Yes, excess use of cooking oil in the food is unhealthy.I always has aware from not using too much oil on my cooking which may lead to the potential of high cholesterol.

I have read that deep frying is really bad for you no matter what kind of oil you use, because heating oil at high temperatures realeases carcinogens. But the best oil according to experts such as PAtrick Holford, is coconut oil. Personally I use olive oil as coconut oil is far too expensive in Ireland. I am a vegetarian so I really like Indian cooking.

In our home, we are using Sunflower Oil for cooking. Recently we started using the Corn oil for all our cooking purposes. For some stuffs such as pickles, we use Gingelly oil. My wife prefers Coconut oil for some of the dishes. So she uses that for cooking for some dishes only. But for most of the dishes we use the Sunflower and Corn oil only.

In my home we like to use Olive Oil for cooking, as it is the healthiest. Ocasionally we may use Peanut oil. The collesterol level is a very good question. I've never actually looked on the back of the bottle to find out. Although I have read about Olive Oil & its suppose to be one of the best oils to use when cooking, because of the health benefits for our bodies. I think the excess of oil in foods is only harmful to the body when its not a good oil. E.G. Vegetable Oil. The only oil that I know of that is less harmful to beautiful beings, is the Olive Oil. There have been alot of products made from Olive Oil, chefs use it alot in their cooking & also salad dressings. Olive Oil can be used for many purposes. Maybe that is why it is so popular.
