Reading To Children

Hi: I am wondering how many of you read to a child. I don't have any children in my home and I am thinking of having a time where I could invite children over for a read or maybe have a reading time at our church or at the park or something like that. I don't know how that would go over but I think some kind of reading would be good for children. Somewhere where they could find the time, away from distrators, and just read. I know they read at school but what if they could just get away from it all and read. It would also give the parents a break. Being a retired teacher, I know there would have to be rules for the children as well as the parents. I just think it is a great idea. Any suggestions? Thank you for your honest feedback.

Hi: I actually had a reading party a couple years back that went really well. I invited friends with children (about 12 in all) and had them in different areas of my house - all organized by age group. At the time, my son was 5. I am also a teacher, so I asked a few of my students to come and read to the children (I teach high school). Each of the high school girls read 2 stories to the kids (age-appropriate - I got books from the library and used some of my son's favorites) and then afterwards, the kids did activities with the stories they read. You can have them do things like imagine alternate story endings, create a new character for the story that fits with the theme, draw their favorite parts of the story, make finger puppets or hand puppets, etc. It was a lot of fun and the parents were very appreciative! Good luck!

Thank You. Yes. That was grand of you. I was also a tutoring supervisor at a local church before. I truly enjoyed it. I would like to have a book club of children or something like that on a continuation basis.

I do read to my daughter - she is 4 years old. My son is turning 7 (tomorrow!) and he likes to read himself now. He does sit and listen as I read to my daughter sometimes. You could check with a local library, maybe they would let you volunteer your time for a story hour. We have gone to Barnes & Noble for story time also. Just some thoughts! It is a great idea!!
