well teens now are different. if you cannot choose what gift you can give, then shop with her and know what she or he likes to have. then you will have an idea on what gift to give.
or have time to talk to them and know what's on their minds and what they like to have.

That is a hard age. We had one turn 17 today (the 26th) and I don't think his dad figured out what to get him yet! For his daughter's 15th last month he just gave her some money for clothes or whatever she wanted. She actually liked that better than a gift. Too her it was like two gifts in one. She got the gift of money AND the gift of a day out shopping for whatever she wanted with her friends. For other birthdays we've gotten his son video games or music. This year was just different because we agreed to put some money towards the car he wants to buy. He won't get it for probably another 2 months so it will be like a late birthday present but that happens with big purchases like that.
For yours just think about what types of things they're into and choose something related. Gift cards seem kind of impersonal but when you get to these teen years it's usually the easiest way to go. Good Luck!

I have a daughter whose birthday is in December and one whose birthday is in October. I wouldn't decorate for Christmas or Halloween until after their birthdays.
When they were about thirteen or fourteen, I caved. And I hated doing it. I bought them gift certificates for their favorite clothes store. I felt like such a jerk because I don't think you should give people close to you money or gift certificates but they loved them.
