refferal websites

Okay...recently i have been working on a lot of websites such as paid to click and my lot and all that. BUT you really cant earn that much money on them...the best way to really earn are refferal websites I have been signing up for them and adding my url link to their site but i totally dont understand the concept...is this all i have to do? or do i have to do something else because i havent gotten any clicks..please fill me in i really dont understand it.
