Apparently the USDA is just as stupid as the FDA

I just got this newsletter from the Care2 website I belong to. Does this ring of stupidity or what? Now lots of people prefer to buy organically grown foods, as it's supposed to be purer than regular commercially grown food for the consumer market.
Well now it seems that the USDA has made an announcement...and it's this:
"Foods Carrying the USDA '95% Organic' Seal Are Now Allowed to Contain Factory Farmed Intestines, PCBs, and Mercury"
A total of 38 new non-organic ingredients are now going to be allowed in products bearing the "USDA Organic" seal.
So like what now is the purpose of paying the higher price for "organic" foods when they are going to have all these non-organic additives added to them?
There's even a petition one can sign if one is so inclined to do so...
See all the details here:

Who puts these people in charge of the USDA anyway??

I'm flabbergasted to know about this one, black cat. You know very well that I was born with a lot of allergies and needed to eat more organic food rather the regular ones.
I do hope that USDA will not make a drastic decision of approving this 38 non-organic ingredients. It would be so unfair for the consumers staking out more dollars in the hope of buying safe organic food.

Well if they are going to add so many things to organic foods, then they should at least lower the prices

I am confused if they are saying that Organic foods can now contain chemicles then how are they going to be organic at all? I dont get it. That is only going to make them chemicaly enhanced which is not any better than than the commercially grown foods.
That is just Bass Ackwards.

WOW! I'm with you - what is the point!
I haven't actually got on that kick yet though of buying organic foods. Especially considering many of them are in plastic containers. I try to buy glass whenever possible.

Makes little sense to me- Organic is supposed to be just that- No additives, no chemicals- no anything- organic. I do not buy organic food- I will if it is on sale- but usually I buy regular food- This makes no sense of the USDA- How can something be organic if it can have any of the 38 non-organic products in the food? And yes it is a much higher price- why pay it if there are non-organics in it?

I went and signed the petition. I think I'm getting as good as you at it. LOL What I want to know is how the USDA can call something organic if it has all of those additives in it. I think they are contradicting themselves all over the place. Thanks for posting this hon. I will definitely be passing it on.

I bet they are appointed. So the USDA has got their hands on the organic foods. It seems that the only way you can be sure that your food is trully organic is to either grow it yourself or hook up with a local farmers market.

Well my question is which government agency is going to play the part of curly, we have moe and larry here. It must be some kind of comedy routine where everybody points the finger at someone else. They all take a stupid pill everyday before making any decisions.

Yep sounds pretty stupid to me - I can't believe we are paying for this junk plus now the government will get their share also :(
Always prefer growing my own when possible or purchasing local where I know what the people do to their fields.

This makes me so mad because my family and I are trying to do the natuaral thing. We are eating more natural foods and doing things like that. We use natural remedies on our kids and ourselves as well. So glad when we move to Missouri I will at least know the people personally that we will be getting our produce from. My inlaws all grow their own fruits and vegetables.

Organic foods have always contained a cerain amount of non-organic chemicals and additives. America does not have fresh produce markets in every town. The only way these "organic" foods can make it to supermarkets for people to buy them is by adding certain things to them. "Organic" has never meant "totally free" as far as the USDA is concerned. If you visit the USDA website, you can find the guidelines for what has always been allowed in "organic" foods.
