Do you lock your doors at night? Some people dont.

I moved to rural NC several years ago from California where I was raised. What surprised me is that alot of people out here do not even lock their doors at night.
Where I come from its what you do, if you dont deadbolt it your not safe. I am trying to understand why people feel so safe in a world that is dangerous to leave their doors unlocked even with children.
What are you thoughts on the matter.

I live in Memphis. We have the highest violent crime rate in the country. If we didn't lock our doors, no doubt, we wouldn't be here.
That being said, I've never lived in a place where we didn't lock the doors. As a child, I can remember my grandmother putting a chair in front of the door as well. "Just in case."
However, my friend in Calgary, Canada doesn't lock her doors and walks around at all hours of the night. It amazes me. And makes me a little jealous.

I moved to a rural town in Southern Mid-Michigan about 6-7 years ago and have not had to lock my doors since. Where we used to live was bad, you were afraid to go out your door in broad daylight for fear that you would be in the middle of a drive by shooting. Yes, it is a very dangerous world out there, but there are still rural places in this country that are still quite safe.

I grew up in a place where many people didn't lock their doors at night. Most of the crimes committed there happened among family members and such, so locking the doors wouldn't have really stopped it anyway.
I always lock my door. I am actually a really paranoid person when it comes to things like that. I don't live in a high-crime area or anything, but I just think I'd rather be careful than not. And having a child has made me even more careful!

When I was a child we would visit out cousins in the country and they left there doors open all night and no one ever bothered anything, well gone are those days.
We lock our door every night and if we are home it is locked most of the day unless there are a lot of people here. We live in the country but im still leary about strangers just popping up out of nowhere.
