if you bought a parrot you should have MADE SURE that you knew what to feed it! and being that you dont state what species of parrot it is..i cant really help you other than to say..for the majority..a quality grade seed and pellet mixture is best (choose the appropriate size for your bird) but they should also be fed a daily supply of veggies and fruits to suppliment the seed and pellets. some species are nectar and fruit eaters only, like lorikeets. they need a special diet that you can buy to mix up yourself. find out the species and do a search for that species diet requirements. for example "lorikeet diet" i got this as a result: http://www.birdhealth.com.au/bird/lorikeets/lorikeets.html depending on the species..the parrot could quite possibly outlive you..therefore in order to maintain its health and well-being (and therefore its lifespan) you should really get a book on your specific parrot specicies..and research as much as you can about him/her. also of note..very few species of parrots are sexually dimorphic..most need to have a blood test done to find out. of the few that do have an obvious difference in male and female..are the Eclectus..gorgeous birds..male is a bright lime green and red and females are a deep almost burgundy red with purple. also of note..even if your species of parrot is known as a good talker..not all do, some just dont like it i guess lol. the key to teaching them to speak (if they are so inclined) is repetition..say the word (start with a single simple word first) over and over a few times a day..not longer than about 10 minutes at a time.otherwise you are practically guarantee that the bird will become bored and ignore you. also try to say the word with the same tone and inflection. that way it sounds the same and the bird recognizes the same "sounds" and doesnt consider it a different word cause you said it a few different ways. do your research and good luck!
