When Is This Rain Going To Stop?

For the past three weeks, we've had rain almost every day, or night, thunderstorms, and it's pretty darned cold. Rivers are bursting their banks in the Midlands and the North, and people are suffering flooded homes, road closures and evacuation from their homes, not to mention power cuts.
Ok, it keeps the gardens and hedgerows nice and green, but what of the poor roses and other flowers which are being tossed and blown in the high wind and torrential rain? They aren't lasting five minutes. The birds have more water than they've ever known, and I can't walk out in the fields and woods because they're total mud flats. I've never known a June like this one... it seems never-ending. I'd just like to get out in the garden occasionally to read my book, but I missed that little patch in April. lol.
Well, I hope it's going to ease off soon or it will be winter again, and no tan! I'm pretty pale at the moment, but as soon as the sun comes out and the wind drops again, I'm going to rush out there quicker than the sea rushes to the shore! I'm so flipping cold at the moment. Oh well, I guess things can only get better from here.
How is it where you are? I might move in with you if it's a lot better. he he he

My cats go out, then they go hide. Poor kitties spent several hours outside, under cars, under the porch, or where ever they can find a dryish spot. All three of them came running to the car when I got home from work.They look at me like "Turn the water off", and they get insulted by the inconvenience. I would not want to have to evacuate, either.

Cats are quite sensible, Mel and will survive, as long as they have some food about. If you leave upper floor rooms available to them, they'll manage quite well. Besides, they know how to climb out of danger. The main thing is that you do as they ask and evacuate, if necessary, because water and electricity don't mix for a start, and rising water in a closed space, like a downstairs room can be very daunting, not to mention dangerous.
So, please, don't worry too much about the cats. They will sense the danger and do what they need to do to survive. Take care, sweetie, and I hope as I read that floodwaters are subsiding, that you will be back to normal, very soon. Brightest Blessings.

Mel, Gaby is very worried about you and the cats. Go to high ground. Or get a boat for you and your cats so you are prepared if you need to leave the house. Put the cats in a carrier and then tie life preservers tightly to the carrier so it will float. I am amazed that you still have power.

Thank you for the invite Lakota but phew.. that is far too hot for me. My body wouldn't be able to take that heat, as I'm quite fair skinned.
There have been six deaths in the Midlands and the North of the country, but on the whole, they're more elderly people who don't have the strength to fight the water currents when it funnels through the streets. I read that the floodwaters are subsiding a little now. I suppose it's mainly when the rivers and reservoirs initially burst that the floods occur, then the rain deepens them. So, I'm hoping we don't have much more significant rainfall, so that people can get back to normal, or as normal as they can get it with damaged homes and no power.
Brightest Blessings, my friend.

One trailer park was to close to a wash and the flash flood took about 10 trailers down the wash just grumbled them up . No deaths from it tho

Usually, as a Lancastrian, it is in my blood to enjoy anything that blights a Yorkshireman, but must admit that I have been greatly saddened by the plight of the poor Tykes. Living in Manchester, we know that it never stops raining, and find Biblical stories of 40 days and nights of rain quite pathetic. 40 days and nights; that's Spring in Lancashire.
I do recall though a little story which will hopefully raise your spirits. Several years ago, Yorkshire was actually suffering a drought, and water was being transported from Northumberland by lorry. The plight of those poor, waterless whippet-breeders was trumpeted around the world, and a great miracle occured. The government of Ghana (I thnk it was Ghana, but may have been an equally poor African state) had a whip-round, and sent a cheque for £40.00 to York council for drought relief. Whilst enjoying the opportunity to mock my Yorkshire friends and colleagues, I did think this was a beautiful action by a very poor African nation, and one that I am glad to re-tell.
Hope you get out into the garden again, soon, and all the best.

Well yes, I've heard the story about Manchester being a rainy place before, but when I was there several years ago, it was blisteringly hot!
Thank you for sharing the story about the £40 cheque. That was such a sweet gesture, bless.
Take care, my friend, and Brightest Blessings.

I daresay there will be a hosepipe ban again Crosa, as reservoirs have been bursting. lol. They always have an excuse, but I'm looking to buy a water barrel to put in the garden, which will catch the rain and I can use it to water my garden. :)
I don't like it to be too hot, 85-90F is my limit, and we quite often have a strong breeze here. I hate it when it's too hot, humid and tiring, though.
It sounds as though you're enjoying your travels. Good to see you, my friend, and Brightest Blessings.

Thank you... today does seem a little better, as we had light rain this morning but that all dried out and it seems brighter, drier and less windy, so let's hope this is the turning point to some decent weather.
I'm glad you finally had your good rain, and hope you feel more comfortable now. I don't like it too hot either... there's no pleasing some, is there? ha ha ha
Brightest Blessings.

I see you wrote this two weeks ago my friend and there has been little change , here is Scotland the best weather is always in the evening , I have been running in and out bringing what is dry with my washing all day , I had sheets out and I would be soaked if I left them all to bring in when it rains , It is a bother too when we go out as we have to take waterproofs with us , I thought with this global warming we would all have a tan , I have gone rusty lol xx

Well I'm in London, and the situation here isn't quite so serious as it is in the North and Midlands, but it's still pretty damned wet! And I understand the forecast for the weekend says that the South is going to bear te brunt of another deluge like the one you had on Monday! So I'm not sure you would want to move here!!

We've had a couple of heavy showers now, but they haven't lasted long and the sun came out behind them. I think that at last, it's quelling.
My... I couldn't imagine what devastation there would be if the Thames burst its banks... they have taken precautions for flooding there though, since the warning with rising water several years ago, so I think London is safe. However, I don't know about further down river, Berkshire and such!

I'm thirty five miles south of London, Rosie, just off the A23 south of Crawley. lol. Therefore, I suspect we shall also suffer the deluge if it comes, but as I've just said, the sun is peeking out from the clouds at the moment and after light rain this morning, the day seems to be turning into a more pleasant, warmer one. Let's just hope they're wrong with the forecast, huh? lol
Yes, Wales, the Midlands and the North, especially South and West Yorkshire are having a terrible time of it... I don't envy them at all. I'm lucky enough to live in an area without too many major rivers, so it's only really the gardens and crops that are suffering. My heart goes out to those in the bad areas.
Brightest Blessings, and stay safe.

That sounds a bit balmy, my friend. I don't like extreme heat, but warmth would do nicely, as that's how it's supposed to be at this time of year! lol.
It's a little better here today but one of these responses tells of a forecast "deluge" in my location, on Saturday. Oh well... it can only get better, as they say. I'm ever optimistic of a summer! :)
Brightest Blessings, Why.

I feel very sorry for all the people that have had flooding. The weather has been terrible so far this summer. I have my birthday on 4th July and so every year I can remember early July being warmer and dryer than this. It was 15 degrees and the rain came nearly all day. On Saturday we went round three different libraries. Usually we would do a scenic walk but the coat looked miserably wet. On Sunday we went to Ikea. When we came out of it there was a very heavy downpour of rain. I live very close to a river so I am glad it has not flooded. The rain here, in the south can be awful but is quite ordinary. What is happening up north is a disaster. I hope the rain is going to stop soon.

Oh yes, I agree with everything you say. The waters have subsided now, and the weather a little warmer, so hopefully, they will all get dried out soon. I'm so glad your river stayed down.
I think the rain is getting less and less although we are forecast thunderstorms on Tuesday and Wednesday, which I believe is your birthday, but let's hope that other than that, the sun shines brightly for you.
Brightest Blessings for a very happy birthday!

I have been hearing about all the rains and flooding your getting. I was wondering how it was near you and that you were alright. By the reports, you are copping it pretty bad.
As you know we had the floods and rain here the other week. Well, now we are getting flooding in other parts and here we are getting rain. As it is winter here, we expect the cold, and it is cold. But you are in summer, so it should be nice and warm. I so hope you get a tan soon! And hopefully the rains will go as well.
So, not much better over here, but your more than welcome.
Best wishes, darkwing, and hope the sun shines soon

Near me, Kay, is not too bad. The rain is torrential at times, but now, it seems to have quelled to shorter showers rather than continuous rain, and I'm not near any significant waterways, so I don't have problems there. We used to suffer, until about ten years ago, because the water used to come down from the higher field behind me, and straight down the bank, flooding the street and the houses opposite, but the problem became so frequent, that they fitted stormdrains, and touch wood, since then, we have been fine. Naturally, all the fields around are under water... the mill ponds don't help there, but considering the problems in other areas, I feel quite lucky at living where I do.
I just hope we're going to get some summer weather soon as it's quite cold, windy and extremely wet, and the gardens are suffering too. Brightest Blessings, my friend. I hope you have had no further problems with rain.

I am so glad it isnt too bad near you. We are still getting some rain, but not heaps. No floods around us. Quite cold though. Sun tryed to shine through the clouds today, but not for long. I hope it dries up for the gardens sake though, cause the ground is just so wet.
Best wishes to you, darkwing, and i hope it gets warmer soon

If I'd seen this post a few days ago, I would have said that the weather was fine, so come on over. But, yesterday it stormed here too, lots of rain. The outdoor cats hid under our car. So, I am not sure you would have enjoyed it. The beaches are fantastic during the summer and spring though. Unless it rains, then nothing is right. Be well, my friend. And, get some sunshine! Being indoors is so gloomy.

well right now in california, u.s. we've been extremely hot, i like the cold better than the hot weather, it's easier to warm up then cool down. i love the rain too it's so romantic, but i don't live in a flood zone so i'm not worried about the flooding ♥
@Darkwing (21583)

Yes, I think California would be a mite too hot for me. I'm used to cooler, living in the U.K. I like rain, when it's normal rain and not too cold, but this was something else. Then, you have the added fear of earthquakes in California, don't you. I suppose we all have something that doesn't suit us too well. lol.
Brightest Blessings my friend and stay cool!

Well, it's black as your hat outside here again, but on the whole, I think the rain is getting a little less. It comes down quite heavy at times, but seems to be short showers rather than all day long, as we were having before. I read that the floodwaters are subsiding a little now, but part of the M1 is still closed around the Sheffield area, but they think they've strengthened the reservoir walls enough now to avoid any further problems there.
I hope your kids haven't suffered to much damage or inconvenience. It looks really awful, all across the Midlands and south and west of Yorkshire. Even Lincolnshire has it, because a 68 year old man was drowned there. I think your kids are physically strong enough to survive the floods... it's their home I'm worried about more, because unless they're well insured, that could cause a problem.
Brightest Blessings my friend and I'll pray that all ceases to be hazardous and you can get up there soon to see them safe and well. Love and hugs. xx

Rain seems to be a common theme tonight. I just responded to another post where there was a total down pour. I drove to work in rain that was so hard that I wore my hooded winter coat to try to keep some part of me dry. Luckily I did not have anyone that I had to take anywhere once I got there. They even had put the van in the garage all ready. We have had some bright days, though in between the floods, and I am grateful not to be having to water stuff. I seem to get incredibly sleepy just about the time the storms pass over. We have a couple, or maybe three more months of summer like weather though, so I will be wishing for rain again eventually.
@Darkwing (21583)

So many people are affected by this. In the Midlands and the North of the country it is especially bad. I'm sorry to hear that you too are suffering with the rain, Gerty. I'm lucky where I am because there are no significant rivers, and the street was relieved of the flooding problem when new storm drains were put in a few years ago now. The houses on the other side of the road, which are lower than mine, were flooding regularly, costing thousands and thousands of pounds to put right. People were having to climb out of their windows rather than open the front door, to get their milk and such, so I can imagine what these poor people are going through in flooded areas.
Let's all pray for a warm July, August and even September and not too much more rain. Brightest Blessings.

Wow that's pretty bad. I've read about some of the crazy weather that's been going on in the UK and around Europe. Here in the U.S. Texas and some other parts of the country are also having a lot of flooding. But where I live in Georgia it's basically the complete opposite. We're in a bad drought. It will rain here occasionally, but it's usually only for a few minutes. I think they said on TV that we're in a 12 in deficit and we're experiencing the second driest year on record so far.
@Darkwing (21583)
•
29 Jun 07
Yes, I believe this is the wettest June on record, and the weather pattern is certainly being upset by global warming. Some countries are overly hot and others being affected by the ice caps melting. Our country was warned that this would happen so one can only put it down to lack of prevention in the first place. If only our governments would spend more money on preventing tragedies like this and less on going to war and then having to rebuild what they've torn down, we would all be a lot better off. Our environment is the most important part of our lives, after health.
Brightest Blessings.

No rain here for 3 weeks and very hot and humid. I'm a beekeeper and we need rain to make the flowers grow, Its cooler today, but how cool is 87F.? I went to a beeyard today, and the bees were ugly too, I got some stings right thru my coveralls. This is in Southern Ontario, near Toronto, Canada. The weather is playing dirty tricks on us!
@Darkwing (21583)

Yes, I think the weather patterns are really upset this year. America and indeed, I believe, Canada had lots of rain and snow in the winter, and now, here are we with so much rain, we can't cope, and it's not normal rain, it's torrential! However, after light rain this morning, today has turned out to be sunny and warmer, so that's a bit of good news.
I'm sorry your bees aren't satisfied with the nectar they need, and hope that your weather will settle more now, as ours seems to be. 87F is about the hottest I can take for long periods... it's more what I'm used to! lol.
Brightest Blessings for a good honey harvest.

It really bad. we need rain but not that it becomes a real problem for everybody. In UAE i have not seen raining except for 3 or 4 times during last 5 years.
The climate here is too humid that I cannot even take my 2 yr old son to the park. It's horrible here in gulf countries. I always wish that atleast we get some months of rain but not like you have mentioned. People having kids please take care of them because they are badly affected due to heave rain and flooding.

I think our problem here is an environmental one... there is not enough time taken and money spent to prevent the rivers from flooding surrounding areas or indeed, bursting their banks. If only precautions were taken, it would save a lot of eventual damage expenses, and save a lot of lives and grief.
Brightest Blessings.
