Temporary Relief from Fibromyalgia (humor)

As many of my friends know I suffer from a very painful condition called Fibromyalgia. For those who don't know what that is let me explain it this way. Remember back to the last time you had a fever of about 101. Every muscle and joint in your body hurt so bad you could barely move. Well take away the fever part and that's what it feels like 24/7. A couple of weeks ago my mother bought me a small epilator, you know one of those ladies mechanical hair removers that grabs the hair and literally rips it out by the roots. It feels like 20 pairs of tweezers pulling your hair out all at once. It is PAINFUL! However, I've found that while I'm using it, I'm focused so hard on the pain where I'm using the epilator that I forget about the pain in the rest of my body! It kind of reminds me of the old joke about the guy complaining his arm hurt so his friend stamps on his foot.. the first guys screams and says "Why'd you do that?" The friend says, "I was just trying to help, your arms doesn't hurt anymore does it?" I've just purchased the larger version of the epilator and stunningly enough I'm actually looking forward to getting it so I can be in pain... to forget my pain... ok does this make any sense to you? I'm afraid that epilating could become a serious addiction for me! LOL!

Oh goodness I'm picturing you totally bald - the girl is going crazy with the epilator - but not feeling pain from fibromyalgia :) Actually I've heard of the condition before but never known anyone who suffered from it and wasn't really sure what it was - thank you for the explination. But do please leave a little hair :)

I have had several friends with fibromyalgia. I don't know how you stand it. I can understand the desperation to do anything to get rid of the pain for a little while. I hope the researchers can find something to help soon. Leave some hair on your head! lol! My thoughts are with you!

Thanks susieq! I hope a cure is found too. I'd like myself and all the others to get some resemblence to a normal life back! I'll try to resist the urge to go anywhere near my head... but I'm not guaranteeing anything about my eyebrows... LOL

Thanks pendragon! I've known there was something wrong since I was in my teens. Although I was extremely active, my body didn't seem to react like other people's. It always took me twice as long to recover from heavy muscle activity. I just always sort of ignored it. It started getting bad for me about 7 yrs ago. I was having a hard time getting out of bed, exhausted all day long, insomnia. Then the pain kicked in. I woke up every day feeling like I'd done a heavy weightlifting routine the day before. It eventually got so bad that I was non-functional. Days at a time I couldn't get out of bed and hurt so bad all I could do is cry all day. I just thought I was going crazy, so did everyone else. Until I got in on an online chat discussion about crafts one day with a couple of other ladies and one had Fibromyalgia. She started describing the symptoms and I said "Holy coW! That's me!!" I found a doctor who was willing to listen to me and he confirmed that it was Fibromyalgia, a few dozen tests later to rule out other causes. He put me on a medication that helped, but it never goes away. Lots of things help in small ways, for some more than others, but it's always there. No cures in sight either. I hope I live to see one.

Hey dmoney! I'm so sorry your wife is suffering so badly. Many doctors don't seem to think it's real because they can't find a reason for it. They have the notion that if they can't find out what's wrong with you, then you must not be sick! How unbelievably ridiculous. I would suggest going to a different doctor, a rheumotologist or someone who specializes in Chronic Pain Management. There's no cure yet but there are things that help. You just have to find what works best for you. I sure hope your wife can get some help. Tell her to not give up! There is help out there.

The epilator pain is tolerable for me, it may not be for others though. But it's enough to take my focus off my Fibro for a little while. And the bonus is.. I get smooth legs to boot! LOL. Thanks Lakota!

Luckily mine doesn't hurt as often, or I should say the severe pain doesn't. I will be turning 31 come next Saturday, and it feels like it gets worse each year. With the hair epilator I got to try it when my mom visited, honestly it really didn't hurt at all for me. I can't remember what night it was but my right leg hurt so bad. It felt like someone was trying to rip the muscle away with a hot poker. For me it usally one leg or arm at a time, now I have had all four hurting, it makes doing anything very difficult. I just feel like my body is falling part and there is nothing I can do about it. I am currently looking at getting my own epilator and stocking up on a lot of batteries so I can do my leg hair, lol. My mom uses her's a lot when she notices a single hair, lol.

That's what scares me since I haven't hit my level of worst yet. I have talked to people that lives in a wheel chair because it hurts so bad to walk. I think I'm doing good though for someone that had her first pains at the age of 5 and I will be 31 on the 7th, not having to take meds for the pain. Doesn't mean I wish I had meds, lol. I just don't like how they make me feel. I can take a non drowsy pill and it will knock me out. I am hurting as I speak, but its just the dull muscle pains, that leads up to the OMG, I want someone to cut my arms and legs off pains, lol. I don't know where everyone else has there pains, but mine seems to focus on my legs and arms. Since having my 2nd child, my knees. Best of luck to you as well.

I'm tellin' ya, it's as addictive as getting a tattoo! LOL. I've had those muscle ripping episodes. I got those before I everything else kicked in. The last one I had put me on crutches for several days. I was 40 before mine really started kicking in. within 2 yrs I was a basketcase and just a non-functional human being. But when the doctor gave me amitriptyline it really helped. I have good days and bad days but it hasn't gotten any worse for several years. Which is what I hear from most Fibromites, once you hit your level of worst, it doesn't usually go much if any farther. Best of luck to you chertsy!

Although I don't have the condition myself, I have heard many things about it. It must be a terrible thing to live with. Even though it sounds a little strange, I am glad that you found something that helps. I have heard that joke before and I believe it to be true. It makes perfect sense to me.

I do understand where you are coming from. I have another friend who also suffers from Fibromyalgia, and I can see the pain that it causes her. I own one of those epidlady things, and you aren't a kidding those things are very painful in of themselves. I use it though, cause it means less shaving I have to do, and the less likely I am to aggravate my skin condition known as Psoriasis, using razors and risking the possibility of knicking myself.

Me and my husband both have Psoriasis although his is much worse than mine. I don't have any on my legs but his knees get bad sometimes. If I had it that bad I wouldn't be able to shave either. Oh well, this way I can get a few minutes of relief and have silky smooth legs as a bonus! LOL Thanks

Hello Craftcatcher, I have a friend with Fibro. She and I have been friends since we were both in early 20's. She just suffers awful with it. At first I could not understand why she was always in pain and then after reading up on the condition, I now understand it better. I try to get her mind on other more positive things and sometimes that help. The epilator is an idea, I think I will purchase one for her. I have Cerebral Palsy and I get musle spasm which do not allow me to function normally in my movements of my arms and legs. It is also painful and are very similiar to a "charlie horse" people get in their leg calves, only thing with CP, you get those pains all over your body. So I can sympathize with your problem. Sometimes when my friend and I are together we sound like two old ladies suffering from old age. I am 33 years old. Not old enough and yet already with the pains. My friend and I try to go out and find those worse off then we are and visit them. They are happy to have the visit and know other care about them and for my friend and I, we are soon encouraged by those we visit who are also suffering. Most we visit are worse off then we are and so it makes us feel better that we are not as bad off as they are. Maybe we should buy a lot of epilator's, and give one to each person we visit. You know, start the first "epilator Club." :0) Want to join? Take care, Hope12

Hey sign me up! I'm in. LOL You're both so young to be suffering so much. I guess I was very lucky. I've always known there was something a little wrong with me since I was a teenager but I led an extremely active life up until I was about 40 yrs old. That's when things started getting bad and my whole life took a 180 turn. I haven't known anyone personally with CP but I know what it is and I feel for you hon. Best of luck to you and your friend, keep your sense of humor going! It's defintely the best medicine.

Well, at least it is taking your mind off one lot of pain. It does make sense. I have heard those epilators can hurt. But while the pain swap goes on, you are also getting nice smooth hairfree skin. But, on a serious note, i do hope it helps. Sometimes the strangest things do. Best wishes to you, craftcatcher

Thanks so much kayrod! It was a little bit of a surprising shocker when I realized that my focus was elsewhere rather than on my Fibro. I think I'm going to rotate limbs so I can use it more often.. LOL

Where did you get your larger version of the epilator? I am suffering from my fribromyalgia right now. I am lucky and just suffer with flair ups and I am having one now! I ache all over from head to toe, and my stomache keeps cramping, my elbows hurt for gosh sakes. Oh well enough about me.

They've got some great deals on epilators on eBay, that's where I got mine. Ah the dreaded flair-up, sucks don't it? That's when I just stay in bed for a couple of days and veg out with a book or something.

As a fellow Fibromite may I suggest these painful distractions, as well: Burying your face into the fur of your cat's belly. Walking around the house at night with the lights off. Plucking eyebrow hair without using a mirror. And my favorite: walking on the asphalt barefoot, in the afternoon of a Florida summer day.

LOL Rosie those are great! I've done the cat belly fur and paid for it with 8 scratches on my chin. It's a definite distraction, yowza!

At least you are going to have lovely smooth skin as a result of your "treatment". There are a lot of things that operate on the theory of counter-irritants. I do not have fibromyalgia, but one thing my doctor recommended when I refused vioxx and steroids for a particularly bad arthritic joint was Zostix. It is a cream made with capsaicin (hot pepper) oil. The only thing I have ever heard of using it for besides this is to treat shingles (herpes zoster). Lots of other names are available, and several strengths. You put it on, and when it gets active, it feels like a sunburn. You do not want to get the cream on your hands, as you might get it in your eyes or on other sensitive mucosa. I do not know if you would find it beneficial for your disorder or not. I just remembered where else I have heard of using it. For a migraine, it is recommended that you put just a tiny bit inside the top of each nostril. So my smooth friend, I do not know if you would want to try my suggestion as well, you could end up being hot and smooth.

Hot and smooth... that's great. Better not let my husband read this.. could get him all frisky! I have another friend with Fibro, one of the few males I know who has it, he takes very hot baths to relieve his pain. I haven't yet tried any topicals that work, Bengay, Icy Hot, Aspercreme, none of them worked but I'm willing to try anything once. I'll sure look into it. Thanks hon!

I know a couple of people who have fibromyalgia but I really don't know much about what causes it. Do the doctors know? Both of the women I know worked at a factory for years. I don't know if there is any connection.

I know exactly what you mean! My mom and I have fibromylagia and we have both been in situations that was so painful, that later we commented that that particular pain made us forget-for a while- the pain of fibromyalgia. Good analogy.

I think that if you found something that helps in any way, as long as it's not harmful then good for you. I don't have this, but I know other people who do and it really takes a lot of energy some days just to get up. Good luck and I hope it keeps on working for you.

I suffer from Fibromyalgia, Lupus,Sjogren and 2 times cancer survival. I know what pain is.I am on Soc.Sec.Desability.I think you take some pain killers for the pain. All those have side effects, and before you know it you end up with more pain. Don't think is a good idea to create strong pain just to forget the small ones.I enjoy my life crosheting, kintting and cooking.

The great thing for me is the epilator pain is tolerable but it's enough to take my focus off the Fibro for a while. It's a welcome relief though it doesn't last too long. I wish you the very best of luck rodica!
