I have had this in the ground for 2 years now this is the 3rd blooming season. Finally it appears it will look great. Last year we had one single floerlet on it. Now I've 4 at least and appears a fifth is growing. They have started to open up finally as well. Hydrangea are really hard to grow here in Minnesota outdoors but seems grandpas green thumb has pulled through finally on this one. This hydrangea has been babied as opposed to all my other flowers and fruits and veggies. This one gets food and fertilizer during the year. It's special I guess. It's my wives favorite flower out in my yard.

I hope your hydrangea flowers well, Grandpa Bob. They can be really lovely when out. I presume you have a pink one? Did you know that the hydrangea is normally white, but it also gives forth blue, red, pink, or purple flowers. The colour often depends on the pH of the soil; acidic soils produce blue flowers, neutral soils, pale cream and alkaline soils produce pink or purple. Aluminium is released from acidic soils, and in some species, forms complexes in the hydrangea flower giving them their blue colour.
So, there you go! It would be interesting to note the colour yours bloom in.
Good luck with them, and Brightest Blessings.

Mine is pink and it was last year. We try adding chemiclas as directed to alter the soil and change the color but seems it'll be pink again. The wife wants it blue. I said go buy a blue one then. HAHAHA!!

i was going to mention this :)
we have had a blue one in our years as long as i can remember-my grandfather planted it.
i did something different this year, and added some mulch to see if it did change color as i'd heard, and sure enough,it is!
it is now starting to turn purple.
i am thinking of buying a few more, they're beautiful
when they bloom.

Oh this is going to be really nice- My mom has a hydrangea bush- It blossoms each year and is just beautiful- I don't have any- I think we might have when we moved in- but my sig other ripped alot of the bushes out- The people we bought the house from owned a fruit stand-farmers market and always planted the extra bushes and flowers in this yard- We had so many!

That's beautiful Bob! You are right, it's hard to find hygrengas for our area. I have one called "LimeLight." It originally blooms lime green, then turns a soft pinky rose as the summer goes on. By fall the blooms are a deep burgandy and absolutely gorgeous! Last summer, I cut a few of the blooms off, and let them dry. They never faded, and still as beautiful as they were last fall. I can't wait to try it again this year!
Happy gardening!!!

Hey, I have to brag! It may be the only time I get to with you! You grow everything so well. I finally got something as pretty as yours. It is faded now, but was a gorgeous deep pink. They do grow well in Florida, though. I forget what kind of soil makes them pink and what kind makes them blue. Mine have been mostly pink.

Humm, thats wierd. Hydrangeas are one of the easiest things to get to grow here in Kentucky. My mom has alot of them. She gave me some about a month ago & they are actually living! (most things I plant other then Gladiolis (sp?) die) Great job on keepin 'em a live!

No it's not wierd. We have a very cold and
harsh winter. It's hard for the tyo survive
the winters here is why they're hard to grow.

Ours is similar in color. Hubby gave it to me this year as a surprise gift. Hopefully it will come back again next year. I look forward to seeing the beautiful blooms.

Congratulations on getting your hydrangea to bloom for a third year. Especially since you have such severe winters where you live. It is a real chore to protect it in the winter. Try using a fertilizer with a high potassium level next year to incourage more flowers. I mix that is balanced such as a 9-9-9 would be beneficial rather then a high nitrogen fertilizer.

I am sure my morth once told me that the colour of a hydrangea - either pink or blue - depends on the type of soil the plant grows in.
Well last week I was on holiday in Slovenia in central Europe and I saw one that was equally pink and blue. I have never seen one like this before!
I hope your hydrangea continues to do well!

With your green thumb, I bet you can grow anything, Grandpa Bob. Glad to hear your Hydrangea is blooming more than a single flower.
I bought one for my mom for a combo Mother's day/birthday present and she said it bloomed one flower and it's a very beautiful shade of dark pink. Wish I was there to get a pic of it.

I rated the photo and I really did do it before I posted this discussion. LOL
I have a hydrangea and it is turning yellow in the leaves. It has not bloomed in two years. I do not remember what color it is. I do not know if I am over watering it or what is wrong. It is in mostly shade, I do not know if it needs more sun. Help please.

I love hydrangeas! something about their pom pom like flowers which are large yet delicate at the same time. i had a bouquet which included hydrangeas, but they were one of the first in the mixture to wilt. guess they last longer when they're kept on the bush instead of snipped off for some bouquet! my favourite are the blue ones. there are not many blue flowers and the blue hydrangeas are gorgeous.

I am sorry that I am so delayed in responding to this discussion. Our whole family of five have been sick, including me , & I still am (cold virus).
Now this flowrer I can relate to. We grow hydrangeas here quite easily.
I clearly remember the first house I ever bought. There were some beautiful hydrangeas in the back yard. They were pink & I think a mauve/blue.
I rated your photo & wrote a comment.

That looks like it is going to turn out beautifully! I love hydrangeas, but I have roses planted in all of the optimal spots where one could be planted. And believe me, I have LOTS of roses. My mom would plant hydrangeas wherever we moved to, and she would always have the blue ones. Maybe that's why I'm so partial to them myself.

This one looks like it is going to be lovely as well. I looked through a lot of your posts here on your gardening, you are quite the master gardner !! So many beautiful flowers, and yummy things to eat. i can't even grow a potted flower from the store without it dying on me. Maybe that's why I like wildflowers so much. Growing in the fields, I can't kill them.. lol. Keep up the good work Grandpa Bob.
