Sandboxes or sandpits are, literally, sand-filled enclosures used as playground equipment.
"Sandbox" in US military slang has been in frequent use since at least the late 1990s to refer generally to locations in the Middle East/Persian Gulf region, to which personnel are frequently assigned for overseas duty, both before and after Operation Iraqi Freedom. This term is often used in an attempt to speak somewhat jocularly or euphemistically about the desert region in which daily life for US military members can be very uncomfortable.
A sand box is carried by most locomotives on adhesion railways. The sand can be sprayed on to the rail to improve traction under slippery conditions.
A sandbox in military education and training is a box of sand used in conjunction with military models to model terrain and demonstrate tactics that may be applicable in the field.
"Sandbox" can also mean, in a metaphorical sense, a place safe for play or experimentation:
A sandbox (computer security) is a container in which untrusted programs can be safely run.
The Sandbox on Wikipedia and other wikis is an editing area where newcomers can experiment.
Sandbox (videogames) describes open-ended, non-linear play or a mode of a video game that offers it.
Sandbox is also a Canadian rock music group most popular in the 1990s.
