Evidence for the memory of elephants is very well known. Elephants can retarce migration paths from which they have been separated for many years. They can recognize individuals from their herd after many years of separation. Scientists who have studied them in the wild have seen herds revisit the bones of deceased relatives and actually caress the bones with their trunks, trumpet in a keening sound and weep, apparently grieving their lost loved ones. Elephants who have suffered at the hands of men have been known to recognize their abusers many years later and in places far from where the abuse occurred and attempted to either flee or attack their abusers. All of this eveidence would appear to be proof that the memory of elephants is on a level with that of humans. The absence of a way to communicate of course prevents us from knowing to what extent and exactly what they remember. THier cognitive power is indeed great. A recent story in the news told of how elephants in certain places are actually demanding toll from trucks carrying food. Their feeding grounds have been destroyed and crops are grown there. They will actually block the road when the trucks go to carry goods to market and will only allow them to pass if the farmers unload piles of food beside the road, yet once the toll is paid, they allow the trucks to pass. They remember the road used, and seem to know the times of harvest. Villages have been attacked in the night after baby elephants were killed by the villagers. These attacks seemed to be well planned and the specific village targeted among many. we are only beginning to understand and appreciate the seemingly significant mental prowess of this great animal.
