Cats are very fussy my cat will only use the tray if its clean.
When we had three cats if one of them used the litter the other two wouldn't go on it cos it's not theirs anymore. When a cat uses it, it scents it making it that cats own loo.
We use recycled paper in ours it doesn't clump so she thinks its still clean and uses it again lol.

one more idea.... she/he...might have a medical issue... such as a urinary tract infection... which is painful and that she/he associates WITH the litter box, hence, she/he doesn't want to go there. it's still gotta happen, the pain is still there, but the cat just associates the pain with the box which is probably the first time it came about.
just to rule that problem out, i would schedule a vet visit... then you can go from there. good luck!

You said cats. How many is that? They are very clean, and do not like a dirty litter box. It is said, by a vet, that you need to have one litter box for each cat, plus an extra. If you have a large home, you need to put them in other areas. It is hard to break them of that habit, once it stops. I can only suggest that you use a water bottle and squirt the kitty when you see him ready to mess on the floor and say no, and pick it up and put it into the litter box, followed by a treat to reward good behavior. Also, use vinegar on the spots he made on. And, make sure you have enough boxes and they are clean. One last thing. Sometimes they do not like a certain litter brand. Try mixing with a different one gradually and change it. Mine use natural pine chips. No odar, no mess, no problems. Good luck. Do not hit or yell at your cat, that will make it worse.

Is your cat refusing to go in the box all together? or is he standing in the box and just pooping over the edge onto the floor? If it is the first, he may not like the litter you are using or thinks the box is dirty. you could try switching to a different litter, or just lining the tray with paper, so that he gets the idea that is where he should go.
If it is the second option that he is doing, you may just need a bigger pan with higher sides. My cat used to "miss" once in awhile, but hasn't since I bought him a covered pan several years ago.
Good luck.

Does she always do that? (or most of the time?) Maybe try just putting newspaper in one of the trays for awhile; it could be that she just doesn't like cat litter for some reason and that she perfers the paper for some kitty-logic reason that makes sense to only her. If you can get her to go on the paper in the tray, you may then be able to add a tiny bit of litter back to the tray each week so she gets used to it slowly.

You just can't stop. I have a cat who does the same, she misses the litter, she goes inside it but she stays to close to the end of it and her poo just falls outside.
You can buy those litters that have ceilings, it's like a closed box, I think your cat will stop to miss the litter box like mine.

perhaps you can put something next to the tray, something like hard carpet or mate ... not soft one. if cat feel disturb in it teritory they will look to somewhere else. like your room perhaps hahahaha ....

Did he use the tray before?
You might try taking the oops from the outside of the box and putting it IN the box. (Yes, I know this is gross) Then his/her scent will be in the tray.
If the tray is too small, get a larger one. We have 3 cats and have a real big one.
Also make sure it is clean. With 3 cats I have to do the catbox at least every other day. Sometimes everyday.
Hope this helps!
