In reading books, which do you prefer using 'Do you ever use a 'highlighter' or just simply a 'pen' for making marks of those lines you've read that you find more interests or wants to remember still?
For me, I usually use a highlighter marker for my lines of interests line by line while reading, so that way I could still come back for more readings at the same lines soon.:-)

I dn't use either of them, i simply use a pencil. There's a reason behind it. Using highlighters or pen markers makes the books unsuitable for nybody else to read it. Worse, even u r also not gonna like it when u pick the book again for reading. Making use of pencil is much better. The pencil marks can be rubbed off easily.

i agree with this...if I mark anything in a book, it is with pencil...becuase I dont' want to read a book, my own or anyone else's that is all marked up with pen or highlighter...that's just not enjoyable and it's distracting. So pencil it is.

You know what? I don't usually write in books. However, in college I used both but mainly highlighters.

I usually just put a post-it note or bookmark in the page that I want to remember.
I agree with the former post about not really liking to mark up books. When someone else would read them, or if I was to reread them again down the road, they could possibly be interpreted different. I wouldn't want my perspective from that particular reading to influence anyone else's (or my future) view of the story.

If it's for educational purpose, I use highlighters in marking my book. That way I can easily scan important stuff that I may refer to afterwards. If it's for personal or leisure reading, I don't mark my books at all. As I often like to enjoy the entire book and I'm not the type to take notes or quote from a book. ^_^

Neither, for the same reason as the poster below me. I use tiny post-it-notes instead.

I prefer highlighters myself. With more than one color you can even color code what you are emphasizing. I think the color cheers me up, and makes me pay more attention than a line of pen or pencil. I like different kinds of office supplies, and I really like high lighters and sticky notes.

I 'd like to highlight the part I want to remember and am interested in. by this way I can easily know where i should start to read and where I will end when I come back to review it again.
Another reason for me to do that is when I come back to the books I have read, I feel a sense of accomplishment at the sight of these highlighed part. I usually will say to myself.I conquered them.lol...

I used to use a pen, but now I have qualms about marking up books. I prefer to keep books in as close to original condition as possible. I usually even take off the dust jackets while I'm reading books so they don't get torn.
Instead of marking a book up, I usually make a note in a notebook with the page number and my own thoughts about the passage. This seems to work better for me.
I've reread some of the books that I marked up a long time ago and sometimes I wonder why I thought a particular passage was so great.

If they are books I don't want to keep, then I would highlighter pen, but if they are books that I find valuable and want to keep, I will not mark them. I would probably take notes from them instead.
I am always using highlighter in magazines or written papers though, if I want to mark something that is interesting and want to refer to later. :-)

Yes, that's one good idea and that's right it would help keep the books more newer to it's look if it's being handled more careful...and taking notes instead of marking using pens or higglighter would be a good choice indeed. Thanks for sharing. :-)

i like using highlighter than penmarkers...
penmarkers are a little messy i cant concentrate on things ive marked coz of the lines but when you use a highlighter is easier to read the sentences that being higlighted.

Like several previous posters here, I do not generally mark up books.
I do not mark the following:
Books I borrow from the library
Books I borrow from friends/family
Fiction books
When I do mark books, it's with a pencil and only the following:
Educational and reference books
I do occassionally use a highlighter, but it's typically for such things that would be more permanent (not up for interpretation) like definations, quotes, dates, names, etc. Concepts, ideas, and the like I would use a pencil.
I also like to jot down additional stuffs in margins of books (in pencil of course).
