I think this is one of those things I could never do. As much as I try to be non-judgemental and forgiving, having been a victim of violent crime in the past does tend to color my opinion of people in prison, even though I know ultimately that not everyone is there for the same type of thing.
I know a few people who have had prison pen pals, or visited strangers in prison in order to help them and comfort them. I think it's a great work on their part, and I very much admire them for it.

If people want to do it to be helping someone out then fair play.
But some people in this world (and the majority of them are in prison) don't deserve help of caring human beings, many of them probably lie about who they are or what they have done. You could never be totally sure if what they write is actually true.
Quite a few people who are in jail are the real manipulative obsessive types who are dangerous to people more than your average thug and can work peoples emotions.
Dangerous place to go, so i wouldn't bother.
