why are weddings so expensive?

I am an event organizer and I have always wondered why people spend so much money on weddings... (an event that marks a lifetime journey) and less time and effort on the marriage itself. I mean what is the average cost of a wedding these days?
What is the most you spent on your wedding?
What is the least you spent on your wedding?
Is it possible to have a relatively inexpensive wedding in this day and age?

I know people want to make their day special and this sometimes equates to spending money. Also, people want to make sure their guests have a good time, eat well and enjoy the entretainment so that usually means spending more money too. Me, I have never been marrried but woulod prefer to sepnd the money on a great wedding overseas without too mnay guests, just intimate company and without it being like a theatrical production.

Yep! I totally feel you.. Theatrical production is the right word. Special definitely is not synonymous with expensive is it?

exactly my dear, I am amazed on how fortunes are being spent on this single day, but I understand because me too spent a liitle on my wedding day, though it is not as big as what the others usually spend for me it's still much.
However, the happinees and contentment were priceless of course.

I think they wanted to make it memorable moment and day of their life. For myself, I only spend US$100 for the marriage certification. No photo taking, wedding ceremony and not even wedding dinner for celebration.
Lot of my friends are curious and shocked about this. We got the agreement from both parties parent to agree on this decision. We told them that marriage is our personal life, and the most important .... we must be happy and last till our very last day of life. We do not want to spend $$$ and rather save $$$ on other stuff like houses, children etc.
As for spending for marriage, I personally think is what you want ... whether a glamorous or simple. As long as you are happy with it.

yeah i know its about the couple's preference but most people don't even think about themselves and the life after. They loose all sense of reasoning too. $100 for real? wow that is so cool!

They spend because they think they should do this to show their status in society
