It is very safe to make this statement: A great majority of people living in this earth somehow believe in the existence of God or Supreme Being! That nobody can dispute.
Having known that, beliefs and/or relegions have been shping the history of human beings since the start of time. It is a major influence nobody can deny. Faith is a refuge for a lot of people on times of great distress and a rock in the face of troubles.
As varied as we are, there are so many type of faiths and variations all over the world. In fact, the very definition and identity of the Supreme Being is sometimes contradictory to each other if we have to compare all of them.
Now, why do you believe in what you believe?

Hello, tombiz!
I think idealism is a very common human instinct bestowed in it's nature. Somehow We all probably follow some ideal. This ideal may not be a 'being', It can be any physical or non physical thing. It can be money, happiness, a good life (whose definition is different for every individual), luxuries or it can also be some non physical thing like a spiritual being. In normal definition this 'spiritual being' is GOD. So, considering above, we all probably believe in some kind of god/gods, to follow.
In every field and realm of life, circumstantial evidence plays a very important role. It is also very important in scientific circles, like theory of evolution is the best example which thrives on circumstantial evidence. Same is the case for theory of gravity, quantum mechanics, our scientific understanding of outer world, origins of life, big bang etc all are based on circumstantial evidences. I believe that there are a lot of circumstantial evidences for the existence of GOD, spiritual beings and so on.
I have shared my brief story here about how came to belief in GOD by myself:

Shortly speaking, as an engineering, I don't find a single design which was created by itself without human intervention. Everything I see in this physical world, that is designed, is a work of human art and mind. Is it possible that when a robot can't make itself without an engineer, when a chair can't make itself without a carpenter, a car can come into being without a designer and manufacturer, then how can a complex design and structure like humans can come into being without some intelligent being (more intelligent than humans) behind human making? To me as an engineer, human creation without a creator is unlikely.

I don't want to talk you out of your beliefs nor do I think I could necessarily, but I just wanted to state the other side of the argument.
With chairs and cars, you can watch people create them. With trees or people or the patterns carved in the land by rivers, there is no creator to observe. They just seem to develop on their own. There doesn't seem to be a point in the process where inserting a designer makes sense. If he made everything in the universe, what did he make it out of?
I'm not pressuring you to debate, if you don't want to. I just have found this viewpoint all over myLot, (often coupled with incredulity at the atheist/agnostic point of view) and felt like speaking up in our defense.

Hello, Tanya8!:-)
I am glad that you want to argue and debate about why I believe in GOD.
The points you presented are valid but internally refutable or invalid. I am not sure, if the poster of this discussion would like us to derail the topic. He is asking for everyone's personal reasons to belief. So, unless the poster allows, I'll feel uncomfortable with the debate.
Is it possible that you start discussion on this topic and let me know?
I promise you to leave a comment there and then we can debate without any fear of disturbing others:-)
Looking forward to your discussion, Tanya8!:-)

I believe in God because I can understand that the whole world was created by a person and we name it as God. Human being has got many scriptures which reflects the supreme power who controls this universe. One book which clearly reflects the exisitence of God is BIBLE. After reading bible my faith towards God just doubled. Earlier before reading bible I believed that there is some supernatural power who controls us.

It is because He is always there for me in times of troubles. And though He give me a lot of sacrifices and pains, but right now i realized how He made and mold me into a true woman and human being.
I have faith and i trust God.He is there if you will feel Him by your heart not by mind...

Romans 1:20 speaking of God says "For His invisible qualities are clearly seen from this world's creation onward, because they are perceived in the things made." So I believe because I see his qualities in creation, especially his love, wisdom and power. I see his love in that he gave me eyes that see in color, not in black and white, ears to hear the sounds around me, taste buds that make food so good and so on. I see his wisdom in placing earth exactly at the right distance from the sun to sustain life, in the cycle of rain that falls and is evaporated and falls again providing the water we need to sustain life. I see his power in the windstorm, the powerful waves of the sea and in the atom. I could go on and on and never complete this list. There is strong evidence of intelligent, loving design. God IS there for all to see and my faith is NOT blind.

This is a tricky type question for me to answer..I dont believe in "god" (no longer Christian) but I do believe in a Supreme Being..it just so happens that the being I believe in isnt like many others that ppl do believe in....In Vodou the Bondye (the supreme being) is more like a force rather than an emotional being like lets say the Chrsitian God is...Bondye has absolutely no connection to us and doesnt interact with us at all BUT he is still of great importance...AND another big difference is that there is no worshipping when it comes to Bondye which of course works for me just beautifully (same with Buddhism) since I am one who TOTALLY DISAGREES with anyone or anything being "worshipped.....
Why do I believe in what I believe...because I've seen, felt, experienced too much to NOT believe ya know.....I feel it in my core, I've seen it all in action in my life and in teh world around me...
